About this listen

Sometimes to find love, you must first learn forgiveness.

A dozen years, 2,000 miles, and a law degree after high school, Rafi Steiner continues to harbor resentment toward Isaac Jones, his childhood bully turned NBA star. When Isaac appears at Rafi's favorite restaurant acting like a long-lost friend, Rafi bluntly dismisses him.

But Isaac is tenacious and he has his heart set on the grown-up version of the boy he always wanted and never forgot. The way Isaac sees it, he and Rafi are perfect for each other, if only he could sink the most important shot of his life: his one shot at forgiveness.

as good as the ebook

The story is always full stars, because if I wouldn't like the story as ebook, I wouldn't listen to the audiobook. I can't listen to an audiobook without knowing the book, that's not possible for me.

The performance from the narrator is also very important for me. I can't listen to a lot, because my English as a non-native-speaker isn't so perfect to follow a whole story over hours, when the narrator speaks too fast or too sloppy. Normally I have to SEE the person, who is talking to me in English. It took me a little bit, to come into the narrator, but at the end, it worked. I only have to take a few breaks between. I'm just not yet finish with the book, but I listen enough to give a review.

PLEASE READ MY RATING SYSTEM!!!

To my ratings:

5* - very very good
it's like an A+

4* - very good and will be often re-listening
it's like an A

3* - it's more then a one-time-listening.
it's like a B

new to me author and narrator

since the narrator and author are new to me, I grabbed a short story to start with. I liked it overall. I felt the story line would have been better as a full novel but that is honestly my only negative comment. I will definately listen to a full length novel .

Not good

This isn’t a knee-jerk reaction. I’m not angry, I’ve sat and thought about it, and I think the author made a serious error of judgement and should withdraw this book. Despite having attracted negative reviews pointing out the flaws, the book has been given a new cover and been made into an audiobook. The story involves Rafi, who was systematically bullied by Isaac during childhood. Isaac contacts Rafi as an adult and explains without apologising that he is also gay, that he has always loved Rafi, that his bullying actions were prompted by anger towards Rafi for the feelings he made Isaac have. Isaac exhibits lots of controlling behaviours - he gets jealous when Rafi speaks to others, he questions Rafi’s decision to go out without informing Isaac (who is out of town at the time). Isaac exhibits stalking behaviours - he doesn’t take ‘no’ for an answer, he breaks into Rafi’s home, he plans to change teams and moved states to be with Rafi, he has followed and observed Rafi without his knowledge. Isaac is rewarded for these behaviours - Rafi continually forgives Isaac because he finds Isaac’s looks and dominating behaviour attractive and because Isaac knows his favourite foods. There are some sweet moments that blur the issues a little but I think there are four fatal flaws:

Isaac’s behaviours don’t change and he never apologises, in fact, he blames his bullying behaviour on how Rafi made him feel and he reminds Rafi about his jealousy if Rafi isn’t doing what he wants. 1) There’s an overt message that persistent controlling and stalking behaviours are ok and should even be rewarded. 2) There’s a subtle message that victims are to blame for being bullied or making their controlling partner jealous.

3) Rafi excuses the behaviours and agrees to a relationship because of his attraction. There’s a subtle message pushing the stereotype that gay men only value sex and looks.

4) Casting Isaac as African-American subtly pushes the stereotype that Black men are dangerous.

I think all these messages do a disservice.
