Summary
After my honorable discharge from the Marine Corps, it only made sense to put my skills to good use as a personal bodyguard.
The contracts keep me moving and traveling, and the money is good. All I've ever wanted was to make sure my mother and sister were taken care of after my father passed away. So when Anthony Costello, the notorious mob boss and my dad's ex-employer, asked me to take on a special job for his family, I couldn't say no.
But not even my six-year stint as an elite Marine could have prepared me for the hellscape that is being trapped in a secluded safe house with his son. Diablo Costello is a rude little chaos gremlin that lives to push all my buttons. I can't keep him safe if he's determined to fight me every step of the way. But I can see through the bratty facade. I know what Diablo needs. What he longs for. And God help me, I'm going to give it to him.

Diablo = Brat
I forgot how much I love Diablo and his brattitude so it was so good to listen to it . Skylar is the only one who could have tamed Diablo and it was great watching him bring him to his knees as usual was great hearing from previous characters in the series .

Madness
After hearing about Diablo in a previous book I wasn’t sure if I’d like this book at all, he’s 100% psychopathic but the author makes it work, giving him depth and layers to his actions makes you root for the relationship, then of course throws a spanner in the works to remind you how crazy he is. Loved this book as much as the others

What a character
It starts out quite cartoonish and comical - Diablo is a character like no other. Genuinely hilarious with unsparing vicious asides about everyone including himself - he memorably says that he looks so much like a scarecrow that a bird landed on him once - and maintains an endless torrent of words with remarks that are sharper than even the knives and saws he so loves. (Yes, saws.) The mafia element is pretty much comic book level stuff though still visceral. That’s the milieu of this story. But Cora Rose knows their stuff. The terrific performances from the dual narrators (the one narrating “Diablo” is particularly noteworthy) are fueled by the masterful writing. (Yes, masterful.) Because all of Diablo’s vicious remarks - and he is hilarious - are revealed throughout the novel to be coded language by which we come to understand him as a person, sometimes better than he understands himself. His tantrums and rants remain hilarious but also become endearing, as we come to know what he’s truly expressing, his wants, needs and desires.
The series is called Unexpected and after the first few chapters I had my doubts that these characters would credibly come together - but I needn't have worried. And each sexual encounter builds upon the last and moves the story forward. Most impressively, aside from being genuinely arousing, the dynamic Rose sets up between the lovers is logical and emotionally credible, the ying and yang of it is developed with real, believable clarity, these characters really have their hooks into each other - and they get all the physical details right as well.
Diablo is an incredible character, put to great use in this story which has a lot to offer - enemies to lovers, slight age-gap romance (10 years, from 20 - 30, which I think counts), some suspense and gangland action, definite size difference (which is vividly portrayed), BDSM and a hilarious, unforgettable title character. And Rose's writing never flags. An all-around impressive performance and a great listen.
