About this listen

"You have something I want. Something I'll happily buy… or rent."

As if my life doesn't suck enough already, my insufferable new roommate, Miller MacAvoy, seems determined to make things weird. He watches me all the time, grinning at me like a beautiful idiot, eyes boring holes into me every time I turn my back on him.

It's the last thing I need. Things haven't been going well. College isn't working out at all like I'd hoped. I'm drowning in debt, waiting tables every shift I can get, and falling behind on my studies.

Something's got to give. I can't go on like this much longer.

Miller, being the out-of-touch rich boy he is, keeps offering to throw cash my way. Obviously, I'd rather die than accept charity from him.

Still, he watches and waits. Insisting again and again that I have something he wants to buy. It's insane. I have nothing of value to sell. Absolutely nothing. My phone screen is cracked and my truck could easily be mistaken for scrap.

Wait. No! Surely not. He can't possibly be thinking that.

Can he?

lemon, limes & peaches

I'm not going to lie, I struggled a bit with this book.

It took me a long time ( up until the epilog ) to like Ryan. I didn't like his victim mentality. I understand his trauma, it's not like I invalidate it or anything, but I felt like it became such an ingrained part of him that he didn't want to let it go because otherwise he didn't know who he is.

Miller is a sweetheart, and he didn't mind showing him ( by any means necessary ) how much he likes him, how much he wants him.

I'm just sad it took Ryan so long to let everything go and give into it fully. I know it makes perfect sense for their story, for the way they love each other, but somehow, I always felt like Miller deserved more from Ry.

I loved their push and pull... for the most part. I loved how the story ended and how they kept going and for sure will still do long after the book ends. It's them, and I love how they look back at what happened and find the good in it.

The ending of the book was so sweet it made me tear up. A lemon, a lime & a peach tree. Annabel, just for them.

Rent, paid in full. Forever.

This book is the perfect example that sometimes all you have to do is let go. Let go of the past. Let go of the things that keep you from becoming the best version of yourself. Embrace the unknown once in a while, and get out of your comfort zone. It's hard, I know, but nothing good comes from sitting too much and making yourself too comfortable in that spot that doesn't bring you nothing new.

I gave the performance 4 stars instead of five because the narrators for Miller had a way of reading that was too slow for me even at 2x. I never listen to books at 2x. I needed to open the app every time we changed POV so I could go back and forth between listening speeds. It took away from the experience. Maybe this will not be a problem for you, but keep that in mind if you are interested in these types of things.

Kirt is fabulous 🎙

A mostly fun & spicy listen. I didn't feel like the voice of Miller matched with his character but Ryan's voice was perfect. I will probably listen to book 2 if it makes it to audio.

Story Was OK.

The story was OK, I might have enjoyed it more with different narrators. They just didn't work for me, especially the one for Miller - he sounded way too old.
