 子貢は、その日、大きく胸を張って、腹の底まで朝の大気を吸いこみながら、ゆったりと、大股に歩いていた。孔子の勉強会に赴き、独自の理論を展開すること、そしてそれをほめてもらえる期待に胸を膨らます子貢。そんな子貢に、孔子はどう答えるのか。

　――『論語』は「天の書」であるとともに「地の書」である。孔子は一生こつこつと地上を歩きながら、天の言葉を語るようになった人である。天の言葉は語ったが、彼には神秘もなければ、奇蹟もなかった。いわば、地の声をもって天の言葉を語った人なのである。…こうした『論語』のなかの言葉を、読過の際の感激にまかせて、それぞれに小さな物語に仕立ててみたいというのが本書の意図である。
