About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

Her name is Jane Smith. But to friends and foes, she's Jane Effing Smith.

Why? Because she's the best criminal defense attorney in the Hamptons - the elite world of New York's rich and infamous. Because she's as good an investigator as she is a lawyer. Because she's tough. She's strong.

As Jane is preparing to defend a high-profile client accused of a triple homicide, she's also hired to revive a cold case - a cluster of unsolved murders.

Then another bombshell lands: a devastating medical diagnosis. Terminal. She's got a year to live.

But first, she has a trial to win. Unless one of her many enemies kills her first.

Critic reviews

A gutsy heroine. A ticking clock. A breathless pace. Wow! This one had me reeling (Jane Corry)

A cringeworthy story (women do not speak to ourselves this way) with a very irritating turn of phrase. Narrated by a female "Ace Ventura" type voice, I was hoping it would improve as the story progressed. It didn't.

Generally what I expect from James Paterson. Decent story, quick moving relatively enjoyable listen.
I had a couple of issues with this one though. First I just didn't like Jane Smith the main character. Not sure why but she just really irritated me. I think part of it is she just gives lawyers a bad name, all about tricks and manipulating juries and witnesses, I found the assumption that the jury members were stupid enough to be taken in by it all very distasteful.
The narration was ok, but I really didn't like the echoey phone voices, it's not necessary, it's a book not a radio drama.

Typical Paterson

Struggled to keep listening to it. I was so glad to get to the end.

Definitely didn't float my boat
