 文科省留学生として派遣された夏目漱石。この2つの随筆には、そのロンドン(倫敦)滞在中での抱腹絶倒の漱石の姿がある。下宿の巨躯の婆さんに半ば命令されて自転車を始めるも、乗りこなすのに四苦八苦。坂道を猛スピードで駆け下りて板塀に激突したり、青年伯爵らと出かけたものの暴走して毒づかれたりと、漱石の悪戦苦闘ぶりを描く『自転車日記』。洋書を買い込むべく、滞在費をぎりぎりに切り詰め安下宿に住むが、知ったかぶりの説教をする夫人や、のべつしゃべりまくる使用人の女、下宿の主人夫婦と家主との大喧嘩などに閉口しながらも、彼らに頼られていく様子を描く『倫敦消息』。英国留学中に深刻なノイローゼになったと言われる漱石とはまるで別人の、留学生活を楽しむ生き生きとした漱石がここにはいる。(C) wis(C) 2012 wis Essays
