About this listen

Amoral, cunning, ruthless, and instructive, this piercing work distills 3,000 years of the history of power into 48 well-explicated laws. This bold volume outlines the laws of power in their unvarnished essence, synthesizing the philosophies of Machiavelli, Sun Tzu, Carl von Clausewitz, and other infamous strategists. The 48 Laws of Power will fascinate any listener interested in gaining, observing, or defending against ultimate control.

Make no mistake this book is controversial, but not for the reason you might expect. Critics argue that the book is somehow dangerous. What I deduce from that argument is that hard topics, in the view of some, are simply not to be discussed and the increased censoring we see is a symptom of that desire for control over speech and thought.

I'm grateful for these authors for not caving into those pressures. This single factor alone merits my respect. Having the strenght of their convictions, they provided us with this incredible exploration of one of the most complex problems we all deal with on a daily basis, whether it be an interpersonal struggle, in business or in society as a whole.

I can say I have seen all of these 'laws' in action at some stage or another within the various arenas I mentioned earlier.

Firstly, I recalled as these laws have been used to exert power over me as a young uneducated young man lacking in resources, convictions or a defined sense of self. But now having matured and gained influence and power in the realms important to me, the book became that useful mirror as I audited the manner in which I gained power and the manner in which I continue to try to progress as time moves on. I can see clearly thanks to their brilliant exploration of these topics the dark elements I wish to avoid so as to not harm those over whom I have a responsibility of care.

I found taking breaks after each law to ponder them to be the most useful way to understand this world and my place in it as it relates to power. If exercising unrighteous dominion over others is something that is equally abhorrent to you, then reading this book will enable you to see more clearly the forces at play around you and enable you to protect those you love and care over to ensure they are not harmed by those who seek power at any price.

The mirror you never knew you needed.

Read the book and thought it was worth revisiting this. The triumph of transactional actions taking over much of our lives makes this listen quite quaint in a contemporary setting. Returning to this book almost a decade later I see that it is probably a bible to many. I find that the tales are enduring and the use of mythology, fable and story telling add a relatability to some of the concepts. It remains enjoyable today as when I first read it as an impressionable teen, interesting to see how my own experiences and trajectory have lined up with some of the concepts in this book. Think of it as machiavelli light. Perhaps with a less ruthless self promotion.

Helpful refresher

Very interesting, useful and applicable stuff. I kept making connections between the laws and observations I’ve made in real life. Only annoying thing about this is they could have used a deesser to get rid of the sibilance in the recording. Pretty simple issue that the audio engineer should have resolved.

Useful Knowledge. A Definite Revisit.
