About this listen

A thrilling instalment of John Connolly's popular Charlie Parker series.

He is our best hope.

He is our last hope.

On a lonely moor in the northeast of England, the body of a young woman is discovered near the site of a vanished church. In the south, a girl lies buried beneath a Saxon mound. To the southeast, the ruins of a priory hide a human skull.

Each is a sacrifice, a summons.

And something in the darkness has heard the call.

But another is coming: Parker the hunter, the avenger. From the forests of Maine to the deserts of the Mexican border, from the canals of Amsterdam to the streets of London, he will track those who would cast this world into darkness.

Parker fears no evil.

But evil fears him....

Geordy accent is a tough gig, even for geordies! Nice try though

Might need to take notes, but a very engrossing tale to compliment previous storylines
I really enjoy the English setting

utter brilliance!

Again, Connolly goes beyond brilliant, balance, prose & at turns; dark comedy. Like a poem of infinite depth, with only how Harding can really deliver. What a team..never end this series.

great entry in the Parker series, but...

truly awful English regional accents by the otherwise reliable Jeff Harding. Hard to listen to.

The British accents are truly awful

I decided to just see the funny side - Poor ol' Jeff Harding in his booth absolutely mangling the British accents. I'm enjoying the story which I guess is what counts, but if you're a Geordie, maybe get the paperback.

Better than some reviews suggest

I thought the story had so many different layers and could possibly be the author’s best. It is not the usual Parker story but I was totally hooked. I really cared about some of the characters and I’m glad I ignored some reviews. I admit the Geordie accent was not great but Jeff Harding is so good I can certainly forgive this.

Oh the accents.

Great and mysterious story. But somewhat spoilt by the ludicrous attempt at British regional accents.

another winner

The only thing I can say negative about this book I'd that John Connolly doesn't write them fast enough. The bad part is the wait for the next installment.

Lack lustre Parker

This narration contains some of the worse British accents since Mary Poppins, but Jeff has the best female voice of all the narrators I have listened to, so a bit of a mixed bag in that regard. My main criticism is that the book seems overly long. While I enjoyed the story, it was obvious to me that it could only end one way, and a lot of the story seemed like filler. For me, this is definately not the best of the series, in fact I would go as far as to say that it was Parker by the numbers. I have been gripped by several entries in the series, unfortunately not this time. I hope there are more to come, but this one lacks oomph.
