About this listen

Richard Mabey is Britain’s foremost nature writer. He has written a regular column for BBC Wildlife Magazine for over 25 years and, in doing so, has created a passionate, lyrical and deeply personal record of the natural world.'A Brush with Nature' is an absorbing anthology of Richard’s best writing, a collection that stands out not just because of the quality of his work, but also because of its unparalleled scope - from observational reflections on nature, to questions about its relationship with language, art and life.

A book full of riches

Thought provoking and gripping. I feel I better understand the world I live in my placing it in my responsibilities to it

Shame about the narrator

Richard Mabey is always interesting, but sad to say, the poor narration spoiled Mabey’s book for me.

Shame about the voice

Mabey is always worth attention, and this is a fine collection of his columns. Sadly, the narrator is one of these rather sardonic types who seem to suck much of the life out of good prose. Still, the content is good enough to make up for it and make this worth a listen.

Read by the wrong voice

Really wanted to love this if it had been read by the author who has a lovely soft voice for nature. However ,this is read by Cameron Stewart who is great for war documentaries...he makes nature sound like the Normandy Landings.Bad choice.

Shocking narrator.

I’m not sure a worse narrator could have been found. They sound like a satirical comedy news caster from Brass Eye… and their monotone barking of the text sucks it dry of any emotion, nuance or joy. So at odds with the text that I am completely bemused.
I love Mabey’s work, but I had to switch this off after 20 minutes.
Such a shame.
