About this listen

Weekly ballet classes are Harriet Morton's only escape from her intolerably dull life. So when she is chosen to join a corps de ballet that is setting off on a tour of the Amazon, she leaps at the chance to run away for good.

Performing in the grand opera houses is everything Harriet dreamed of, and falling in love with an aristocratic exile makes her new life complete. But swept away by it all, she is unaware that her father and intended fiance have begun to track her down.

sweet innocent girl in a dangerous long gone world

Atmospheric, beautiful descriptions of how a sweet and innocent girl manages her harsh life. Despite a cold, unfeeling home with her father and aunt she keeps her goodness and sweetness. Scared, determined she takes her risky chance of escape and adventure and she is off with a dance company working along the Amazon. Works hard, makes real friends who help and protect her, there is adventure and love, wily, selfish men and women, an amazing setting in a dangerous long gone world.

The reader is excellent!

The writing is such that you are there living it all, quite something.

I prefer stories with more of an element of safety and security, sunshine and flowers but I was impressed.

a delight, as always

To some extent Eva Ibbitson's heroines are similar. They all have the ability to charm (although that ability did not work with immediate family in this heroine's case). Despite that, there is no feeling of a plot being reproduced time and again. Real issues and feelings are brought to light, but in the middle of such a delightful story they can either be glided over, or taken up with the plot.

A beautiful tale, absolutely captivating. A love story told with such charm. Thoroughly enjoyable.

Eva Ibbotson seems to paint with her words and thr narrator does it justice. Such a delightful tale that I was helpless but to binge!
