About this listen

Don’t miss Faith Martin’s fiendishly clever new novel, Murder by Candlelight, set in the 1920s and described as ‘the perfect village mystery’ by J.M. Hall

‘Fiendishly clever… A thoroughly absorbing, gripping read’. Clare Chase

Oxford, 1960. In the glorious sunshine of Oxford, on a day when everyone should be celebrating, tragedy strikes when a university student is found floating in the river, dead.

Probationary WPC Trudy Loveday finds herself paired with coroner Clement Ryder to investigate and it soon becomes clear that this case is not going to be easy.

The witnesses all refuse to give a straight answer, each new lead sends them in a new direction and tales of other missing youngsters add further mystery to the investigation.

One thing is certain though, something doesn’t seem quite right about the university’s most popular student….

A gripping, twisty cozy crime novel that you won't be able to stop thinking about. Perfect for fans of Agatha Christie, Richard Osman and M.C. Beaton.

‘Absolutely loved it… The characters were some of the best I’ve read in a long time.’ Angela Marsons, no. 1 bestselling author of the Kim Stone series

…and better!

I like how various outcomes are so apt!!! Realistic Characters.

Loving the narrator.

This series just gets better

This story brings so many people under suspicion that it's impossible to guess 'whodunnit'. It's a great listen, with well-rounded, believable characters. A brilliant piece of writing, brilliantly narrated.

A great storyline

The narrator's performance was good and drew me into the story and developing relationship between the two main characters.
However, there were a couple of references, in the 1960 based story, to letters being sent by 'second class post' but the two tier 1st and 2nd class post in the UK didn't come into existence until 1968. Why are glaring errors as that not picked up before publication? It may be a small error but when a story is based in a previous decade some 60+ years ago, the facts must be correct otherwise it detracts from the authenticity of the story.

Good story but more factual research needed.

From the outset the storyline proved interesting. The characters came alive and it was easy to visit with the scenes that the narrator spoke. The plot was intriguing and developed as the story went along. Truly love. Joy is an absolute treasure and I’ll look forward to seeing her career develop should continue. Well worth the lesson.

A good plot

Good characterisation. Well read with a narrator whose voice is vibrant and brings the characters to life whilst being easy on the ear. Twists and turns in the story keep the listener engaged throughout. Enjoying the series and looking forward to the next book.

Thoroughly enjoyable

Faith Martin is a new author for me and this is her second book in this Series’s This is a sharp cleverly woven plot which also gives a clear view of the early policing days of young women .But constable Loveday is no victim and the story should appeal to anyone who likes fictional crime drama .This a good read without giving you sleepless nights.

Well now my problem is that I'm all out of credits with 3 books left to listen to!
These characters are so deep and intriguing.
The narration is tantalising.
The author splashes around a fabulous story here, a few red herrings there mixed with a back story so interesting that, for that alone, you want to hear the next story.
This story is so good and is already showing a fond progression of the characters from the first book to this.
Now to sort out my credit dilemma...

Totally addicted to this series
