Summary
Stan Barstow's A Kind of Loving finds Vic Brown in a bleak Yorkshire industrial town, striving for maturity in his relationship with girlfriend Ingrid and her small-town ways. The story examines in great detail his feelings as the relationship develops.
Richard Huw perfectly captures the mood and the character in his reading.

Made for Audible
Brilliant Northern love story. Thick accents. Love in a bygone era. Last of the Summer Wine meets Charles Bukowski.

Wish it was unabridged
Losing a star as I wish it was unabridged. It loses its charm somewhat as you hear very little about other family members

A Kind of Loving
Would you try another book written by Stan Barstow or narrated by Richard Huw?
I liked both the Audible book and the reader Richard Huw who put his all into the characters, even the women. I was only sorry that this was the abridged version and covered only the first part of the story. There were huge chunks left out to the point where if one hadn't read the book one might have been forgiven for being at a loss to follow it. It more or less followed the 1962 British drama film directed by John Schlesinger but the full (ITV) is much better.
I look forward to the unabridged version with the same reader if his voice lasts out that long or a sequel for the remainder of the story.
This is a story that needs to be told as it is how a young man can be trapped into a marriage by a girl offering him sex when she can't get him any other way. The bloke then gets the blame for sampling the goods. Young men may not heed the warning but if they don't they certainly won't be able to say they were not warned. My advice to young men is to keep their pants zipped up.
Who was your favorite character and why?
It's got to be Ingrid's father who was the peace maker in the story. Christine was a close second for the same reason.
Have you listened to any of Richard Huw’s other performances? How does this one compare?
I haven't heard Richard before but I have definitely missed something here.
Do you think A Kind of Loving needs a follow-up book? Why or why not?
The sequel could be the rest of the story left out in this version.
Any additional comments?
Well done Richard!

' A Kind and Loving Story '.
Hearing this One of my fondest book's I have ever read ; was so pleasing and gave me
a chance to analyse how the audible version compared to the dog eared novel I have
had in my possession since I was a child.
Stan Barstow wrote A Kind Of Loving to make his reader's aware of how a young lad,
in the 1960s is awoken to lesson's in love. Victor Brown is an easy going lad who is content
with his steady job at a drawing office and his Saturday job in a music shop. Then one day
just after the Christmas holiday's along comes Ingrid Rothwell. He becomes smitten and so
begins Victor's emotional journey of love and loss.
The story of A Kind Of Loving is a classic. I find the situation that Victor finds himself in once
he begins to court the demanding Ingrid Rothwe , recognisable.. ' Vic ' is attentive and loving towards
Ingrid at first. Then once the reality of a life of marriage begins to look a certainty. He is suddenly left
wondering why he even chased Ingrid in the first place and he becomes disallusioned with how his
once carefree lifestyle has become one of his feeling trapped by a young woman he discovers he no longer
love's anymore.
I have read this fine story many times after first discovering the paperback when I was a teenager. The
character's of Vic and Ingrid are fascinating and I am fond of them both. But Victor is the character I find myself
wanting to help and hope gets all his turmoil straightened out.
Richard Hew reads this story very well and brings out the tension and feelings which I have always experienced
by reading Stan Barstow's Kind Of Loving.
Thanks
Craig Minto.

A good story
But I wish it wasn’t abridged and there were 6 interruptions of the narratives causing me to miss the plot of the story. I think you should check the quality of this recording and repair it. As a new customer , I hope that subsequent books that I listen to are in perfect condition.

Blast from the Past
An old fashioned kitchen sink drama. One has to look beyond the sexist language and attitudes of Vic to be able to listen to this story.

How to ruin a modern classic...
Why even record a classic novel like this and eviscerate it? All the character development and important interactions stripped out which left the complex central character seeming like a sexist thug. The quality was poor, missing out chunks of the narration, and the timing was often terrible. At least 10mins of the story was taken up with the awful incidental music too! Remake this with the full story please!
