About this listen

With her wonderful storytelling abilities and endless array of gorgeous clothes and toys, little Sara Crewe seems to everyone at her boarding school like the luckiest girl in the world - a 'little princess'. no less. But one day disaster strikes, and she is moved into an attic and turned overnight into a drudge.

All but a little cluster of her most loyal friends turn their backs upon her. Constantly cold, with barely enough to eat, and reduced to wearing the outgrown tatters of her former wardrobe, how will she cope? Will she remain a true princess - a girl capable fun, kindness and unselfishness even in misfortune? Above all, does what Sara calls 'The Magic' truly exist?

Created over a century ago, A Little Princess is still of contemporary relevance, being essentially a story of childhood and survival. Along the years it has delighted and moved by turn adults and children alike.

In 2012 it was ranked number 56 among all-time children's novels in a survey published by School Library Journal, a monthly with a primarily US audience.

Finally, I am sure Frances Hodgson Burnett would not have found it amiss to mention here that Zada, the studio cat who has listened to every word of this book and quietly overseen its editing, gave birth to three kittens at the very same time that this edition was completed.

A favourite since my own childhood

I first read this in an edition owned by my mother and have never forgotten it. The dignity shown by Sarah during her days of suffering and her capacity to use her imagination to keep herself from despair is fascinating. Wonderful story. I chose this reading because the voice was deep and the tone was unpatronising. The accents were a bit wobbly though.
