About this listen

In the final book of the series that began with The Darling Buds of May, the fun-loving Pop Larkin finds himself confined to a bed following a mild heart attack - caused by a little too much of what he fancied. Ma battles with the doctors as she attempts to find an adequate cure, but it turns out that a seductive nurse is all he needs. Pa's spirits truly recover themselves when he is forced to defend his home from the ministry's railway plans. This concludes the tales of H. E. Bates' Larkin family - a winsome gallery of characters who live as many of us would like to live, 'if only we had the guts and nerve to flout the conventions'.

Beautiful and a touch of true happiness

Amusing as ever, the whole Larkin family thrill with their misdemeanours and wonderful acceptance of all life brings them and acceptance of all the people the meet, we could learn a lot from them.

A Little of What You Fancy

It's a shame I have now come to an end with the Pop Larkin series. This book was slightly heavier for a while with the heart attack, but nevertheless i did enjoy listening to it and was sad to come to an end.

More than a Little to Fancy Here

This fifth offering in Bates' joyous tales of the irrepressible Larkins is tinged with not a little sadness. Partly this concerns a problem with Pop's health, but it comes about also because this is the last in this series ever written by Bates. Sadly, this means that it is also our last opportunity of feasting on the incomparable Philip Franks' unsurpassed readings! But the Larkins are never downcast for long, and, happily, these glorious paeans to life, love, family and the wonders of the English countryside remain in digital format for us to savour again and again! After all, a little of what you fancy ...

Very disappointed.

Previous books were far better in every way. This was boring, dragged on to hell, went on about some things far too long and then just when it started to get remote interesting, it ended. I am very disappointed. The previous books were fantastic. This was an absolute pure let down. I am very shocked this was even released.

Can't believe it is the same author

I have watched every single TV darling buds many times. I listened to the previous 4 audio books and enjoyed them. This one was hard to keep listening to. I can only assume it is the same as the book but it was Not enjoyable and quite upsetting. I will not listen to it again. Hope to send it back.
