About this listen
Lady Emily Hardcastle is an eccentric widow with a secret past. Florence Armstrong, her maid and confidante, is an expert in martial arts. The year is 1908 and they’ve just moved from London to the country, hoping for a quiet life.
But it is not long before Lady Hardcastle is forced out of her self-imposed retirement. There’s a dead body in the woods, and the police are on the wrong scent. Lady Hardcastle makes some enquiries of her own, and it seems she knows a surprising amount about crime investigation...
As Lady Hardcastle and Flo delve deeper into rural rivalries and resentment, they uncover a web of intrigue that extends far beyond the village. With almost no one free from suspicion, they can be certain of only one fact: there is no such thing as a quiet life in the country.

Cosy crime to send you to sleep
This was my first Lady Hardcastle read and it was pleasant enough and I will read again another. I tend to listen to these kind of books before I'm going to bed to get me in a nice relaxed mood! The plot was pretty thin and the characters two-dimensional, but the relationship between lady Hardcastle and her maid is amusing.

very entertaining
This book is a very challenging 'read', with likeable characters who have a crime to solve .
I enjoyed the book for its readiness, nice style of writing and distinctive female leads. I was not gripped by the story, but enjoyed its unfolding. I will very likely be listening to the next in the series as I liked the characters and the writing. I am not left thinking about the book after reading it, it's a light read, not a deep read

Been trying to find a replacement for Sidney Grice and March Middleton, and this is it.

Loved it
Who was your favorite character and why?
My favourite character? Hmmm....Florence Armstrong of course, but then Emily Hardcastle is also my favourite. It just wouldn't be fair to separate one from the other?
What does Elizabeth Knowelden bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
I like Elizabeth Knowelden's reading of the story, she has the humour and the character of Flo, nailed. However, one ever so teeny, tiny, thing I would mention...her pronunciation of some of the Welsh words is a little off, however, I ignored that and it didn't spoil my enjoyment of the story.
Any additional comments?
The characters of both Lady Emily Hardcastle and her diminutive, yet indomitable, ladies maid (and long time companion), Florence Armstrong, are perfect. They compliment and balance each other well and I felt engaged with them from the beginning, wanting to know more about them. The sleuthery (?) was fun, interesting and culminated in a very satisfying way.

Light and fun
This was light and fun, and not a long listen. I would definitely consider others in the series next time they're on sale.

Relaxing listen
This is what my friend refers to as a cosy murder. Somewhat in the Agatha Christie vein the characters are charming and the plot delightful.

Absolutely marvellous…
An enjoyable, witty and fun romp through Edwardian class structure with a surprisingly well-plotted series of interlinking crimes. And unusually well narrated!
