Summary

'I could see that still no one had been able to get out from the cockpit. It must have been at this moment that I thought I was going to die because I became remarkably calm.'

Trapped inside a burning Lancaster bomber, 20,000 feet above Berlin, airman John Martin consigned himself to his fate and turned his thoughts to his fiancee back home. In a miraculous turn of events, however, the 21-year-old was thrown clear of his disintegrating airplane and found himself parachuting into the heart of Nazi Germany. He was soon to be captured and began his period as a prisoner of war. This is the engaging and enthralling true-life account of a Second World War airman who cheated death in the sky, only to face interrogation and the prospect of being shot by the Gestapo before having to endure months of hardship as a prisoner of war.

A great book !!

Colin Baker narrates this book which for me made it a great easy listen and moving at times.

Great real life true story with some in depth details making you feel you were there.

Would be a great book for the older generation but I’m only 40 and appreciated every chapter

Great book

The narrator is brilliant. The book shows the true extent of what happened in WORLD WAR 2.

Great to hear from those that dedicated their lives for us

Life experiences at 21 far exceed ours today .. great to hear John Martin’s story and dedicate it to his crew. We all need to remember what that generation did for us..

Slightly Misleading Title - a PoW's Story

An excellent story about the experiences of a PoW, rather than a story about flying in the RAF in WW2. Enjoyed listening.

enjoyable if overlong

Well read and engaging, though the title misleading - the Raid is only a very small part of the story! Much more a POW tale and excellent portrayal of camp life reality.
