About this listen

Charles Paris is in clover. He has been contracted for three whole months to play brainless bobby Sergeant Clump, foil to the charismatic amateur sleuth, Stanislas Braid, in a TV series of that name. Recourse to the whiskey bottle is still needed, however, to get him through a day’s filming - one made all the more arduous by the pompous posturings of the show’s star, and the constant outraged interruptions of the ancient author whose detective novels are being adapted.

Indeed, there is plenty of friction about. But when a particularly unpromising actress is killed, crushed to death, there seems no reason to doubt it was an accident - except in Charles’s mind. Leaving behind a trail of broken resolutions and empty bottles, Charles indulges in some sleuthing of his own. He may lack the panache of the suave Stanislas Braid, but unlike the great detective, the danger Paris encounters is only too real.

a good performance but not as good to listen to as when billy nighy performs them.

good twists

Simon Brett is one of the few writers who can read his own material with style, wit and...timing impeccably. His stories are always wryly amusing, the characters are frequently partly-fleshed out artistic types, and Charles Paris - his regularly drunken actor-sleuth - never falis to put himself in harms way and then extricate himself at a crucial point. This story, about a TV production of a series of crime novels by an old author, is well-paced and intriguing. You can't go wrong with SB but don't bother with another reader as they simply don't have his style.

CHARLES PARIS WINS AGAIN

Always engaging and never disappointing, Charles Paris series is a joy. Read beautifully by Simon Brett(as well he might). Do listen!

Classic Charles Paris

Something went wrong. Please try again in a few minutes.

Unusually, Charles Paris the almost perpetually out of work actor, has a job. In fact, he had a three month television contract playing a police sergeant in a series of six cosy mysteries. And his crime investigations continue off stage after the female lead is found dead, believed to be an accident by everyone but Charles. And, once again, the philandering, hard drinking actor dreams of reconciling with Francis, his wife.

Narrated by the author, this is another easy read, fun book by situation comedy writer, Simon Brett.
I loved it.

"A confusion of constables."

Very well narrated by the author. Such a good series following the flawed Charles Paris.

Excellent

it's always great to hear the author read the story, and this was a really great story. Although shorter than most books I listen to, it didn't leave me feeling cheated. The story was well rounded, well written, and had lots of twists in the plot. I can't wait to read more from this author, especially if he's reading them himself.

A big shorter story

First of this series I’ve purchased ….easy listening , gently humorous despite the murderous story line !
I can see myself gathering these into my library . The main character is both extremely annoying
in his private life — yet slightly endearing as well . The outcome was unexpected but believable .

Intriguingly Good

Not as strong a storyline as usual. Easy listening though. A bit far fetched in the end.

Simon Brett reads it well.
