Summary

In a London hospital, Prudence Barrymore, a talented nurse who had once been one of Florence Nightingale’s angels of mercy in the Crimean War, meets sudden death by strangulation. Private inquiry agent William Monk is engaged to investigate this horrific crime—which intuition tells him was no random stroke of violence by a madman.

Greatly helped by his unconventional friend Hester Latterly, another of Miss Nightingale’s nurses, and barrister Oliver Rathbone, Monk assembles a portrait of the remarkable woman. Yet he also discerns the shadow of a tragic evil that darkens every level of society, and a frightening glimmer of his own eclipsed past.

Critic reviews

"Anne Perry's mysteries, set in Victorian England and featuring William Monk and Hester Latterly, are engrossing....Anne Perry and Davina Porter seem made for each other. Porter reads in a manner that enhances the story and completely immerses the listener in the various characters, no matter what their sex or station in life. She captures the essence of each person's voice as the novel moves from an arrest to a trial and a surprising conclusion" (AudioFile)

Disappointing ending.

The main characters are as well written as usual, the plot is excellent, until the very end where a lot is left unresolved as it ends abruptly with a number of issues needing resolving. It left me asking...but what happened to X, did You go away etc.

An Enjoyable book but somewhat disappointing!!

This was gripping in parts and the characters were very well drawn. great historical background too. however the plot seemed to stall in the second half and it was extremely frustrating and unbelievable the way the plot line was dragged out. the clever detective looked pretty dumb in that section and made me want to shout at him. the court scene at the end was very unbelievable too and could have been done differently without changing the plot. shame, these aspects spoilt it for me, however the narrator kept me going she's excellent. think the author should work more on the quality of the individual books instead of churning them out in such quantity.

tedious

Much too long and I can't think of anything good to say about it. Excellent reader otherwise I'd have given up after a couple of hours. I persevered to the end just to get my money's worth but I shan't be reading any other books by this author.
