Summary
Spend a year in the company of the ancient Egyptians, during the twenty-sixth and final year of the reign of Amenhotep II (c.1400 BC), which saw a royal transition bringing Thutmose IV to the throne of Upper and Lower Egypt.
While builders from the secluded village of royal tomb workers rush to complete Amenhotep's tomb, and craftsmen labour to finish the numerous extravagant objects to accompany the god-king in his burial, most Egyptians go about their daily lives in ways unchanged for eons.
Following the Egyptian calendar year, which was divided into three seasons (inundation, sowing and harvest), we will meet a farmer and his family, an embalmer, an artisan, a royal physician, a priest and even a royal wife as they live their lives in Thebes and Memphis during the eighteenth dynasty of the New Kingdom in this remarkable year in ancient Egyptian history.

Fascinating
An excellent journey through a very interesting year—-the death of a pharaoh, the Sed festival, and lots of the personal stories of the farmers, potters, architects, and priests that make up the tapestry of this period of Ancient Egyptian history. Of particular note is the vivid description of the defeated Canaanites entering the presence of the pharaoh, which was quite harrowing. I would have been absolutely terrified.

accurate assessment of what was likely happening during the reign of pharaoh Amenhotep II.
It was read to us beautifully. It includes known historical facts from the reign of the second Amenhotep. I think this king gets a rough deal from some Egyptologists because of his known treatment of some captured rebel chiefs and their gruesome ends . Maybe they themselves committed atrocities against Egyptians to be deserving of their own ferocious destruction?. But it's so well written and it is fair to AmenhotepII I feel. Great characters. Events that likely and some definitely occurred. I'd highly recommend listening to this wonderful gem of a book.

Excellent work and a must for any Egyptophile
Dr Ryan introduces us to a full cast of people from the dynasty that gave rise to the most famous Pharaoh of them all, Tutankhamun. Based on real people from kings and their viziers to fishermen and potters, we get a genuine slice of life portrayal that is historically accurate. Supported by occasional footnotes, the year we walk through encompasses the death of one pharaoh, the rise of another, a visit to the doctor, a visit from the taxman and the most crucial of all to Egypt's ability to endure, the Nile's flood. While a degree of licence is used for certain individuals, the stories are fact based and are all fascinating. The narrator provides a lively performance that brings the characters to life and makes you root for them. Completely enjoyed and hope that there are more to come!
