THE INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER and MOST-ANTICIPATED BOOK OF 2025 FROM THE FINANCIAL TIMES and NEXT BIG IDEA CLUB

'Spectacular ... Inspires hope' New York Times

'One of the most important political books of the past decade' The New European

The threat to liberal democracy isn't just autocrats - it's a lack of effective action by so-called progressives.

We have the means to build an equitable world without hunger, fuelled by clean energy. Instead, we have a politics driven by scarcity, lives defined by unaffordability and public institutions that no longer deliver on big ideas. It's time for change.

Bestselling authors Ezra Klein and Derek Thompson have spent decades analysing the political, economic and cultural forces that have led us here. In this once-in-a-generation intervention, they unpick the barriers to progress and show how we can, and must, shift the political agenda to one that not only protects and preserves, but also builds. From healthcare to housing, infrastructure to innovation, they lay out a path to a future defined not by fear, but by abundance.

Abundance or scarcity as a life choice

Do I want to flourish and if so how can I enable all to flourish

What a challenge! How will we live?

Presents clear ideas and examples arguing for a government that is effective in practice, rather than on paper. Well-narrated by the authors. My only disappointment is in the shortness of the book, and its lack of concrete policies to bring about the future described. Otherwise, thoroughly compelling.

A Disappointing Present and A Hopeful Future

The solution to the terrible situation where current evil regimes and politicians are turning hard right and isolationist.

Someone make Trump read this!

A very enjoyable description of modern America... which edifies the listener in a gentle tone.

depth of content

Perhaps understandably, very US focused with many of the comparisons being made to how amazing things are in Europe and Asia… where there is also an over-consumption issue. Preferred Klein’s narration and would have preferred it all the way through. Definitely not as convincing as much of his other work and thin on details.

Disappointingly thin on details

Every politician in the western world should read this book. Well written and shockingly relevant for Norway as well as US.

Great

Fantastic analysis of how the western world is holding itself back, and how we need to change our mindsets to address the problems of today for the benefit of tomorrow. The narrative is very much focused on the US but there are lessons to be learned for all democratic nations. The authors did a good job at narrating (despite the fact usually finding American accents a bit grating for audio books). A must listen!

Essential listening for anyone who wants to hear a pragmatic vision for building future of humanity

I'm not sure how I ended up selecting this book. If nothing else, it gave me an insight into the perspectives of people with whom I profoundly disagree.

Heavy on ideology, light on evidence.

As an avid follower of US politics from a UK perspective, this book resonates not only with ideas for why politics is failing in the US but also in the UK. Highly recommended.
