Summary

The real nightmare starts when her daughter is returned....

A bone-chilling psychological thriller that will suit fans of Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, Daughter by Jane Shemilt, and The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins.

A girl is missing. Five years old, taken from outside her school. She has vanished, traceless. The police are at a loss; her parents are beyond grief. Their daughter is lost forever, perhaps dead, perhaps enslaved. But the biggest mystery is yet to come: one week after she was abducted, their daughter is returned. She has no memory of where she has been. And this, for her mother, is just the beginning of the nightmare.

powerful

This is a very tense story of a kidnapped child. Very sympathetically written. Superbly narrated

Hard going

Is there anything you would change about this book?

I nearly gave up on this book. I only managed to finish it by skipping over several sections that were droning on too long. The idea was interesting but something in the book was lacking and the performance of the narrator was irritating so I was glad when it was over.

What three words best describe Antonia Beamish’s performance?

Shouty, irritating, annoying.

Did After Anna inspire you to do anything?

Yes, skip past some sections of it and almost quit half way through.

Any additional comments?

I wouldn't recommend this book at all. The narration is very shouty. I read other reviews saying the shouting was bad but I couldn't imagine it but listening with headphones on and having the narrator shouting in my ears was not pleasant and it happened a lot. I found the way the narration was done made me not connect to any of the characters and the main character Julia I disliked so that half the time she was in peril I just wanted her to shut up and go away. If I hadn't bought this book with a voucher I would return it for a refund.

Good story but one to shout at!

Julia - you know who the bad guy is surely?? It’s clear from very early on. Still was a tense and chilling listening and I enjoyed it. Not the best from this author but still worth a listen if you like his other work.

Excellent nailbiting thriller!!,

If you could sum up After Anna in three words, what would they be?

Nailbiting!
Thrilling!
Creepy!

What other book might you compare After Anna to, and why?

I Let You Go, the same edge of your seat capacity to keep you guessing!

What does Antonia Beamish bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Brings out the suspense angle very well.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Nearly!!

Any additional comments?

Shame about the shouting

This was a good story, if a little unbelievable at times. However, I almost stopped listening because of the narrator, who seemed to think it was necessary to actually shout when the characters in the book were getting agitated. It certainly made me agitated. Surely the text in a talking book should be enough? Very irritating.

Cracking buildup

Really enjoyed the build up and the whodunit of this, even though I feel it quickly becomes clear who it was though the author keeps it going very successfully. Does lose a bit of momentum but otherwise very satisfying

said, said, said oh and just for a change said.

At the point of writing I am about an hour in to this book and I already know waht I'm going to say. The plot is good. The grammar as per usual is pathetic. Brian said, Julia said, D.I. Wynn said and so on and so forth. It's not as if the author, you can't call her a writer, doesn't know the words she might use. She just can't be bothered to use them even when the alternative is obvious to the word 'said'. So I cannot give it five stars no matter how good it gets. The style is awful though it might yet redeem itself slightly. Already i see holes in it though. the phone is remarkably well charged for having only plugged in for twenty minutes and why didn't she take ehr car? Where did it go? Is it still parked alongside that of ehr husband even though he picked ehr up? Has anyone tried sprinting in high heels? I wonder. I'll finish it but I don't expect it to improve much. Would i buy another book by the same author. I think not. In fact, no way.
