Summary
The first collection of memoirs from the author who inspired the BBC and Channel 5 series All Creatures Great and Small. This edition contains If Only They Could Talk and It Shouldn't Happen to a Vet.
Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, to the young James Herriot 1930s Yorkshire seems to offer an idyllic pocket of rural life in a rapidly changing world. But from his erratic new colleagues, brothers Siegfried and Tristan Farnon, to incomprehensible farmers, herds of semi-feral cattle, a pig called Nugent and an overweight Pekingese called Tricki Woo, James finds he is on a learning curve as steep as the hills around him. And when he meets Helen, the beautiful daughter of a local farmer, all the training and experience in the world can’t help him . . .
Since they were first published, James Herriot’s memoirs have sold millions of copies and entranced generations of animal lovers. Charming, funny and touching, All Creatures Great and Small is a heart-warming story of determination, love and companionship from one of Britain’s best-loved authors.
'I grew up reading James Herriot's books and I'm delighted that thirty years on, they are still every bit as charming, heartwarming and laugh-out-loud funny as they were then' – Kate Humble
'Herriot's enchanting tales of life in the Dales are deservedly classics. Full of extraordinary characters, animal and human, the books never fail to delight' – Amanda Owen, bestselling author of The Yorkshire Shepherdess

shame about the music
great story very well read by Christophe Timothy, but the periodic music was unwelcome and distracting.

Thoroughly Enjoyable
So enjoyable, sound quality great. All characters/stories brought to life and made you feel as you were involved in all the action - especially the runaway car moments! Siegfried’s “loss of memory” antics made for familiar reading.

Lives up to expectations !
This was a delightful read, it is really rare for me to laugh out loud at a book, but there were several places where this one tickled my sense of humour and I had a chuckle!
A nice gentle tale, of course I know the overall story from years ago, but it was a joy to be reminded. Christopher Timothy reads beautifully.

Fantastic
The book is engrossing and entertaining. the narration is great. The only slight oddity is that there are musical interludes that don't really seem to line up with any of the transitions in the story.

Transported back in time to the Yorkshire Dales
Christopher Timothy was the only one who could be the narrator for this absolute gem.

Fantastic mesmerising listen
Absolutely adored this book. Brought Yorkshire to life, on a side note , on the strength of this book I went on holiday to North Yorkshire , beautiful place.
Book brings to life a much simpler way of life and is utterly enchanting. If I was feeling a bit stressed or a bit fed up listening to this transported me to another time, it was like meditation. Loved it.
Just listened to it again , it was a relief from lockdown and stop me wallowing in despair. The funny bits on this are hilarious, I listened in bed and was crying with laughter and woke my husband . Just bought the other two which I did not even know existed! And Christopher Timothy is a fantastic narrator
