Summary
When Aidan Lloyd's bleak funeral is followed by a nocturnal ritual in the fog, it becomes all too clear that Aidan, son of a wealthy farmer, will not be resting in peace. Aidan's hidden history has reignited an old feud, and a rural tradition begins to display its sinister side.
It's already a fraught time for Merrily Watkins, her future threatened by a bishop committed to restricting her role as diocesan exorcist for Hereford. Suddenly there are events she can't talk about as she and her daughter, Jane, find themselves potentially on the wrong side of the law.
In the city of Hereford, DI Frannie Bliss, investigating a shooting, must confront the apparent growth of organised crime, also contaminating the countryside. On the Welsh border, the old ways are at war with the modern world. As the days shorten and the fog gives way to ice and snow, a savage killing draws Merrily Watkins into a conflict centred on one of Britain's most famous medieval churches, its walls laden with ancient symbolism.

Phlil rickman doesn't disappoint. He evocatively weaves a story round the landscape of Merrily's border.

Excellent, had me guessing up to the very end
I've listened to the whole Merrily series narrated by Emma Powell. You may think the books start to struggle when the series goes on. Not at all. One of the best yet! I thought I knew the format and work out who was doing what! Wrong! Emma's narrative is superb as there are a lot different characters to handle! Phil has a lot of subtle sub plots going on with plenty of humour that Emma has picked up on. Thanks for all the books Phil! Keep them coming.

good read but a bit confusing
As with all Phil Rickman books there is a lot of mystery and tradition in the story.
The story is very good if not a bit confusing in places particularly at the end, had to listen to it twice.
A good read while worth listening to.

Exce!!ent story
I really enjoyed this audio book. I had already read the book, but I had wanted to re-read it, so I thought I would try the audio version. I'm glad I did, as I had missed some things in the first reading. I was enthralled by the Kilpeck part of the story, as I have always wanted to go there. This book really held my attention. The characters are much loved, and it feels like you know them. I am very much looking forward to the next book.

The best Merrily Watkins mystery?
I have listened to all of Phil Rickman's Merrily books. They are all really excellent. This one is definitely one of the best - if not the best. At least one big surprise relating to recurring characters in the series. Very highly recommended but it may help to have listened to OR read books 1 to 13 first!
Emma Powells narration is perfect. Very highly recommended.

Spooky Without Being Scary
All the usual themes and characters are here, which is what you want from a series in my opinion, but the story stands up on its own. I like the Merrily Watkins books because, although there are scary moments and dark themes, they don't keep me awake at night. I love Phil Rickman's writing style, particularly his evocative descriptions and use of similie. If I had to choose between this series and his longer novels, billed as stand alones but nonetheless related to each other, I would choose the longer ones, but I still keep coming back to Merrily.

Merrily does it again!!!
All the old favourites including Bliss, Annie, Gomer, Jane, Lol & Eirann but Phil has done a bit of a "Game of Thrones" with this one.. Who's left standing?
