Summary

How far would you go to find yourself? The lyrical, life-affirming novel from the bestselling author of Private Peaceful.

There were dozens of us on the ship, all ages, boys and girls, and we were all up on deck for the leaving of Liverpool, gulls wheeling and crying over our heads, calling good-bye, I thought they were waving good-bye. None of us spoke. It was a grey day with drizzle in the air, the great sad cranes bowing to the ship from the docks as we steamed past. That is all I remember of England…

When orphaned Arthur Hobhouse is shipped to Australia after WWII he loses his sister, his country and everything he knows. The coming years will test him to his limits, as he endures mistreatment, neglect and forced labour in the Australian outback. But Arthur is also saved, again and again, by his love of the sea. And when he meets a nurse whose father owns a boat-building business, all the pieces of his broken life come together.

Now, at the end of his life, Arthur has built a special boat for his daughter Allie, whose love of the sea is as strong and as vital as her father's. Now Allie has a boat that will take her to England solo, across the world's roughest seas, in search of her father's long-lost sister… Will the threads of Arthur's life finally come together?

If there were more stars I would have given them

I didn't know that this book was primarily for children. But I am so glad I bought it. Beautiful doesn't do it justice. It was one of the best books I have ever read. The other being The Beekeeper of Allepo.
The narrator's were both outstanding. I was looking for Emilia Fox when I came across this one. Tim portrayed a perfect Australian.
This is a book I highly recommend.
Thank you to the author for sharing his story.

A brilliant story

Michael Morpurgo packs so much into his writing and it is brought alive by equally good narrators. A must read/listen.

How an orphan was treated

Really enjoyed listening to this story. Well read and so interesting. Needs to be told what was done to children in the past in the name of social work!

Wonderful

I first heard part of this on the radio broadcast and bought the audio version to hear it all.
Thoroughly enthralling and I listen to it often, again and again.

Pass the Kleenex.

Beautiful story, beautifully narrated. I enjoyed every minute. Of course Michael Morpurgo never puts a foot wrong and he doesn't this time. This book is a delight.

Tears of sadness and joy but with a happy ending

This is truly a heart wretching story, the first part it so hard to listen too as you know it really happened. But the second half turns this story into a truly happy ending. Definitely worth getting through the whole story.
