About this listen

Tales of adventures on the high seas captivate both sailors and those who stand on the shore and gaze out across the oceans. In this original collection of sea stories, edited by veteran writer Dick Durham, the gamut of human experience is mirrored in a world of tragic shipwrecks and sea monsters, epic races and brave rescues, tall ships and tiny dinghies.

Short stories

Basically enjoyed this but it was rather bitty. Stories a little on the short side and lots of them. Also beginning of each new chapter was lost and no pause between previous and the next chapter so that I was i was sometimes confused as to which story i was listening to. That said I enjoyed it overall and amazed by the protagonists bravery and resourcefulness....Reader was fine.

Ffools taking the natural elements for granted and getting away with it

It's always difficult to review true adventure accounts in my opinion and this one is no different. It's all about fools and heroes taking the sea for grantd and working with it but getting away with it when thousands didn't or wouldn't. It's all right but nothing special though the reader spoils it for me. I can't stand the narator's style at all. It might have been good if somebody else was charged with reading it because this book doesn't really come to life. There's very little expression so you never get the sense that you're really there going through the dramas of it all. In other words what might have been a fairly good book spoiled though I'd not recommend it to serious sailors since they'd probably think people doing this kind of thing with no experience mad and disrespectful of the sea and sailing on it.

If you like short stories....

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
It is well read. You can fall asleep listening to it one night and pick up again the next. There are a good range of different stories in the volume from light humour to drama to horror.

What was one of the most memorable moments of Amazing Sailing Stories?
I liked the author's personal anecdote about taking part in the Fastnet race because of the wry and witty telling of the tale but there is something for everyone here.

What does Steve Hodson bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?
Steve reads with an excellent pace, not too quick for the drowsy listener nor over egging the drama. Each story has a different tenor in the writing and intent of the piece that Steve is able to convey admirably.

If you made a film of this book, what would be the tag line be?
From Joshua Slocombe to Naomi Campbell via Moby Dick and the Marie Celeste, this audio book covers the gamut of sailing stories, well written and masterfully narrated.
