About this listen

Brought to you by Penguin.

A powerful and commanding account of the life of trailblazing political activist Angela Davis.

Edited by Toni Morrison and first published in 1974, An Autobiography is a classic of the Black Liberation era which resonates just as powerfully today. Long hard to find, it is reissued now with a new introduction by Davis, for a new audience inspired and galvanised by her ongoing activism and her extraordinary example.

In the audiobook, she describes her journey from a childhood on Dynamite Hill in Birmingham, Alabama, to one of the most significant political trials of the century: from her political activity in a New York high school to her work with the US Communist Party, the Black Panther Party and the Soledad Brothers, and from the faculty of the philosophy department at UCLA to the FBI's list of the 10 Most Wanted Fugitives.

Told with warmth, brilliance, humour and conviction, it is an unforgettable account of a life committed to radical change.

Inspiring and still totally relevant today

Angela Davis is a role model, an icon, a leader, a legend. Her modesty would not allow her to accept such praise I am sure, as in true leadership style she would point to the work of so many others in sharing credit. She has dedicated her life to the struggle for freedom and against oppressions. This book documents the how and the why and the price she, and millions like her, have paid for resisting inequality and injustice. Everyone should read it; all will learn from it if they engage with her messages. I am proud to be on the same planet as this black woman.

Just brilliant

Angela is certainly a force to be reckoned with, this audio book brought me to tears so many times. It's such a treat to have the Icon herself do the narration.

Absolutely amazing!

Loved every bit of it, very engaging listening to all of the details of her story and how it links to every other person in enduring the struggle in their fight for freedom.

Listened Intently

I took my time in listening to this book and the detail has given me a better understanding of what Angela Davis endured throughout her past experience and where she is current.

I was captivated and had to listen and repeat many chapters.
