September 11, 1973: Eleven-year-old Alejandro Penda watches from his apartment window as Santiago, Chile falls to a military coup, destroying his family and his childhood. Arriving alone in America, he’s taken in by the Larks: a prominent family in the town of Guelisten. Though burdened by unresolved grief for his disappeared parents, he becomes fiercely loyal to the Larks, eventually marrying one of their daughters, Valerie.

September 11, 2001: Javier Landes watches from his apartment window as New York City falls to terrorism. As one of Manhattan’s top-paid male escorts, this professional lover has never lacked for company and is loyal only to himself. But in the wake of 9/11, Jav is named guardian for an orphaned nephew in Guelisten and must open his carefully-guarded heart to pain he's long suppressed.

Alex, Valerie and Jav meet first in their twenties, with a sudden attraction each finds strange and compelling. When they meet again in their forties, they discover not only is their bond still strong, but their life experiences are strangely similar. All have been shaped by separate 9/11's, and their unfinished business from the past will change everything they know about love, loyalty and friendship.

Across three decades and two continents, Suanne Laqueur's award-winning novel explores the unpredictability of sexual attraction, how family ties are forged, torn and mended, and how love's downfall can turn to exaltation.

I couldn't stop listening to this. Loved the story, the strange coincidents, the sadness, but also the hope and love.

Well, wasn’t this a fascinating exploration of romantic, fraternal and paternal love!! I adored the character work; the plotting with serendipity deliciously woven in; and the language with its metaphorical prose, lush imagery and dialogue that rang true. AEoL was not a tragedy or downer of a story but it had an underlying melancholic thread that enabled the moments of love, friendship, compassion and triumph to vibrantly pop. Unfortunately, 30% of the book concerned teenage progeny (my personal bias as I dislike young adult angst) and some events were belaboured to (unnecessarily) drive home a connection or a parallel. Be that as it may, l was delighted that l went into AEoL spoiler free because as Javier, Alex and Val navigated life’s ebbs and flows, the organic unfurling of twists and turns were so very unexpected and that closing chapter had the best denouement!!

✨️🎧✨️ Darren Eliker was natural and effortless especially with Alex and Javier. Whenever they had a scene together, Eliker held character and perfectly conveyed their multi-lingual and accented English / Spanish conversations. So. Smooth. Yet, it was his Jamaican lilt that was the standout accent work as he nailed its pronunciation and rhythmic cadence. He voiced women appropriately with Gloria’s upper class, grande dame persona being my favourite. Darren also modulated his delivery so that the frantic thoughts of an adult in meltdown or the vulnerability of teen love or a child's fear of the dark emotionally landed. Finally, l loved DE's attention to every detail down to authentically pronouncing names of foods, drinks and places. 4/5 stars

🌧 Vanessa DeSilvio gave Trelawny a voice like irritated sandpaper; Val came across as a young adult rather than a mature, grown woman; and male voices were completely beyond her. DeSilvio's narration (roughly 33% of AEoL) was not to my taste: 1/5 stars

Pointless grim smut. I just wanted to chuck it on the (virtual) fire. Absolutely dire.
