In World War II, 59,000 women voluntarily risked their lives for their country as US Army nurses. When the war began, some of them had so little idea of what to expect that they packed party dresses; but the reality of service quickly caught up with them, whether they waded through the water in the historic landings on North African and Normandy beaches, or worked around the clock in hospital tents on the Italian front as bombs fell all around them.
For more than half a century these women's experiences remained untold, almost without reference in books, historical societies, or military archives. This book offers fascinating insights into largely unknown or little-known aspects of U.S. Army nurses serving in combat zones during World War II. Drawing from interviews with nurses stationed at front-line hospitals, their stories highlight an unwavering commitment to providing the best possible medical care to soldiers in combat zones. Despite facing pervasive misogyny, discrimination, and segregation, these nurses saved countless lives, enabling many soldiers to return home who otherwise would not have survived.
Against a backdrop of political and military bungling and with minimal suppoprt or recognition beyond that of their patients, these women served with remarkable and unwavering distinction.

I wish I could make this prescribed reading
This book is simply incredible. This comprehensive account of frontline nursing during WWII is so important and informative about humanity itself. It also starkly highlights how women’s erasure from history harms us all. I admire these women so much. This is one of my top 5 books now and it’s one of those that I’ll return to several times for reference, there is so much raw information here. It’s very good.
