Har i mange år arbejdet som journalist, før hun vendte sin opmærksomhed mod teaterverdenen. Schmidt fik sin litterære debut med romanen "Havfrue på glasskår" i 1990, og efterfølgende har hun udgivet bøger for både børn og voksne.
