Honestly Dreadful

I've never written a poor review for anything before, but was unable to finish this book. I thought about leaving it, but then remembered how desperate some people experiencing anxiety and panic feel, and how important it is to have stellar resources available to help them heal - if that's you, and you are reading this, it IS perfectly possible to heal - it doesn't matter how long you've been suffering.

This book does have some helpful resources, mindfulness meditation does help as a practice (although this is needlessly prescriptive in description), somatic awareness and work helps (although he doesn't refer to it precisely, just notes that people with panic or PTSD have a broken relationship with their bodily feelings - not a helpful way of putting it, and also not universally true), CBT practices also help, it's not so much the content, more the delivery and poor suggestions that potentially could make things worse.

For example, when in the throes of a panic attack, not resisting but calling on God to take it away like a mild cold or headache will NOT help most people.

He makes much mention of why you shouldn't do this or that, because you will make it worse, or the panic will keep coming back. Not helpful suggestions. One that really stuck out was "before you do something stupid" and then almost mocks the erratic behaviour that can occur during panic. Sufferers won't find this funny. What is missing is an explanation as to WHY people struggle to think straight during an episode - the amygdala takes over and we lose access to higher processing in the cortex, so while in the throes of extreme anxiety, it is actually not possible to think straight, yet many sufferers also experience shame and embarrassment about this afterwards, not realising it is normal.

In summary, some helpful techniques, but lacks depth and insight into the condition. I tried to look up the credentials of this author but didn't find any. My recommendation to sufferers would be to seek an alternative with a more evidence based approach and an emphasis on neuroscience. Note however, I didn't finish the book. It might get better, but I lost confidence in the author so didn't continue.
