About this listen

When historian Fluke Kelso learns of the existence of a secret notebook belonging to Josef Stalin he is determined to track it down, whatever the consequences. From the violent political intrigue and decadence of modern Moscow he heads north - to the vast forests surrounding the White Sea port of Archangel, and a terrifying encounter with Russia's unburied past.

I do not usually read this genre, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. At the start I was not sure of the narrator, but I soon started appreciating his skills. Good overall and highly recommendable

Not usually my genre, but thoroughly enjoyed

RH sets a high bar - I did enjoy Archangel but not as much say, Act of Oblivion.
The narrator took a bit of getting used to - if you have watched Foyles War you’ll know how Foyle runs his sentences into one another, seemingly pausing when he runs out and of breath. And his intonation almost sounded bored at times - and the pace rushed.

Enjoyed …but not as much as previous Robert Harris before is

Quite heavy going, a bit predictable. Maybe a bit more historical context would make it an easier listen.

Not the best

I enjoyed reading this years ago and I really enjoyed hearing it. can be hard to conjure characters from Russian stories but narrator did a great job.

very polished thriller

I love RH and Archangel is up there with his best. But that’s no surprise. What is a surprise is the narrator - MK has created the best audiobook I ever heard. Bravo sir 👏🏻

Have read and listened to many Robert Harris books and was looking forward to this one. But it’s some way off his best. And the narration I found very difficult to warm to. The intonation seemed always to be in the wrong place. I did try and persist. I got to within about 4 hrs of the end, but then just couldn’t continue. It became, and I hesitate to say it, quite dull.

Disappointing

another great book from Robert Harris, his typical combination of a great story mixed with a bit of a history lesson. Some books have more historical context, in this one the history just provided a broad framework for a fictionalised story.

Michael Kitchen's narration was so good that I've started my next listed based on searching for the the narrator rather than the author

Superb narration

The headline says it all, not quite alternative history but close enough, throwbacks to Stalin's time quite chilling

Excellent

Great book. Very good performance but the
sound editing and ‘drop-ins’ were very clumsy. Try to record the stories in the same studio

I really enjoyed the story but the volume levels on the audible version wildly fluctuate in places. One moment it'll be too quiet to make out a word, then after you turn up the volume to hear properly it blows out your eardrums.

Great story, terrible production
