About this listen

After a historic hurricane strikes her Southern California desert town, 16-year-old Athena becomes convinced that the global youth climate movement isn't pushing hard enough for change. While she admires their protests, she believes more dramatic action is needed to force governments, media, and climate deniers to confront the crisis threatening her generation's future. She develops a radical new approach that no one will be able to ignore — one that will either save the planet or destroy her future.

This audiobook hits hard emotionally. I found myself tearing up at times, not just from the story, but from how closely it mirrors reality. Athena is a believable and relatable character, someone who could exist in any town today. The story is fast-paced and intelligent, and it made me reconsider the impact of youth-led movements. Isa’s narration captured Athena’s internal battles beautifully.

“Athena” is the kind of story that stays with you long after it ends. It balances the line between fiction and a very real global crisis. I loved how the audiobook addressed the complexity of climate activism — the emotional burden, the backlash, and the personal risks involved. Rick McManus doesn’t just tell a story — he issues a challenge. And Isa McManus delivers that challenge directly to your ears with unwavering sincerity.

“Athena” isn’t just a gripping audiobook — it’s a call to arms. I found myself completely immersed in Athena’s world. The hurricane, the aftermath, the awakening — it’s all so well crafted and painfully believable. I admire the courage in telling a story about radical action without apologizing for it. This is climate fiction with teeth, and the narration gives it the emotional weight it deserves.

The strength of this audiobook lies in its passionate message and relatable protagonist. Athena is a voice for a generation that refuses to stay silent. I only wish the ending had a little more breathing room to fully unpack the consequences of her actions. Still, this is an impactful and important listen with a truly powerful performance by Isa McManus.

Strong Message, Slightly Rushed Ending

The story offers a critical look at the state of climate activism and the need for more decisive action. While I loved the protagonist’s strength and voice, I did wish for a bit more development around the secondary characters and the final consequences of her actions. Nonetheless, it’s a solid, intelligent audiobook with excellent narration and a message worth spreading far and wide.

While I absolutely loved Athena’s character and the overall message, I found some parts of the plot slightly far-fetched. That said, the story still hit hard and provoked a lot of important questions about how far activism should go. It's brave in its storytelling and doesn't play it safe, which I respect. The narration is excellent, keeping the listener grounded through even the most intense moments
