Summary

Val, a widow living in Weston-super-Mare, spends lonely evenings dressing up as the movie star Elizabeth Taylor. It seems to be a way of coping with the loss and sadness she has experienced in her life. One day, when Val sees a pram left unattended on the seafront, on a whim she kicks off the brake and walks away with it...

Set in the present and the 1970s, BECOMING LIZ TAYLOR is a vivid and touching depiction of love, loss and bereavement—thought-provoking, moving fiction for fans of Rachel Joyce, Emma Healey and Ruth Hogan.

Absolutely fabulous

I have loved every moment of this book. Such a simple story of lives broken by grief & the stiff upper lip of old school England that leads to a place of despair, joy, loss & finally self awareness. So well written & with characters built to make you feel their lives deeply. You should definitely buy this book .. especially if you love Weston -super- mare / Brighton & Liz Taylor … however you really don’t need to, it’s just the infused backdrop to a really compelling tale of human life in the microcosm.

A heart wrenching listen

I really enjoyed Becoming Liz Taylor; it was a completely engrossing listen. I felt sympathy for Val, Rafe and Howard and the hands they had been dealt and was willing for everything to turn out well for them all.

Bravo on such an all round original and moving work!

I loved the story and from very early on visualised Val at every step, as if she was in her own movie, which I feel she may well be at some point! What a poignant tale of loss and tragedy it is, yet with hope for both Rafe and even for Val in finally coming to terms with her life. The novel’s themes are deep, yet human, and I so admire the clever way Elizabeth Delo portrays the complexity within Val without judgement, so that the reader can find their own sympathy for her. Just brilliant. I LOVED the filmic Charles Laughton reference towards the end; after the glamour and glitz of Val’s delusions and dreams, it felt like a deeply touching metaphor of self understanding for her, at last. A genius touch!

Bravo on such an all round original and moving work!

Fantastically compelling story telling . Heartbreaking and heart warming .

Beautiful story of the impact of complex grief and its untold emotional impact for ordinary people who express their trauma in extraordinary ways at times . Would highly recommend
