About this listen

In death, they are purified. Holding his victims under water, he washes away their sins as they struggle for their last breath. Then he stakes their bodies to the ground, exposing them for what they really are: witches, sent to tempt and to corrupt.

No one knows about defence attorney Charlotte Wellington's murdered sister, or about her childhood spent with the carnival that's just arrived in town. For Charlotte, what's past is past. But others don't agree. And as a madman's body count rises, she and Detective Daniel Rokov are drawn into a mission that's become terrifyingly personal.

Slightly sickening

I strongly disliked the relationship between the main characters. The man was really domineering and disrespected the woman's requests and somehow that's supposed to be romantic? Feels like a really old fashioned take

The story was OK, a bit gruesome at times. The narrator did their best with a weak storyline.

Gripping read

the beginning is a bit slow but once you get passed it, it's a great read. I enjoyed the plot and the characters, didn't guess who did it either! my first book by this author so will be reading more.

Awesome story and narrating

Really enjoyed this book. Kept me engaged and wanting to listen. Great story and quite unlike anything else I’ve listened to recently

A good story

It take a few minutes to get into the story but it's worth it. It's well told and kinks well.

Love a book that keeps you guessing to the end

This had a bit of a slow start but I really liked the characters and, once it got going, enjoyed the pace of the book. Nice drip feed of Charlotte’s past that really kept you guessing right to the end. This is the second Mary Burton book I’ve listened to and I really like her style.

I listen to a lot of books that are narrated by women with a bit of a southern drawl and have got used to them but this lady reads so fast that I actually had to slow the narration down … never done that before! However, once the speed was reduced it was fine.
