About this listen

*** THE INSTANT SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER***

From adventures at Central Saint Martins to The Great British Sewing Bee, go behind the scenes of Esme Young's amazing life....

At age five, Esme was asked to write in her notebook, but instead, she filled it with drawings—the only way she knew to express herself. At seven, when it was discovered she was partially deaf, she found refuge in her sketchbooks. Shortly after, Esme made her first garment and a passion for sewing and designing was born. As a teenager, she made her way to London where her creative journey truly began.

Living in a squat with other young creatives, Esme made the most of her time; studying at Central Saint Martins, launching a clothing line called Swanky Modes with three friends and £50 each, watching Notting Hill Carnival with David Bowie and altering a dress for Cher. The '90s saw a career move into costumes for films, where she designed outfits for Trainspotting, Bridget Jones's Diary and The Beach, before she moved onto the small screen herself.

A celebration of a creative life lived differently, Behind the Seams is a reminder that it's never too early, or too late, to pick up a needle and start stitching in a new direction.

Pure Esme

I know others have criticised the flow of Esme's reading but I feel like this is the most authentic book because Esme reads it the way she does. What a marvelous woman.

What an absolute gem!

I loved listening to this, read by Esme herself. It is a wonderful meander through her life as a child, as part of the amazing Swanky Modes team and now in so many different roles! It’s an uplifting and encouraging story, especially for anyone who might be thinking that later life is a bit doom and gloom - according to Esme, it certainly doesn’t have to be if you’re willing to take a risk!

couldn't love her more ♥️

What a fantastic memoir! Totally inspirational woman who has had a fascinating life in fashion. Her reading of it takes a bit of getting used to but just adds to the charm and once you start hearing her story, you don't notice as much. We should all be more Esme ♥️

A life lived to the fullest.

I bought this book only because it was a £1.99 daily deal on Audible and the sample sounded very interesting. Despite having no interest in fashion and never having seen the Great British Sewing Bee, I liked the book. Esme Young is a fascinating woman and has lived an incredible life. I most enjoyed the first third of the book, where the author describes her childhood and school years.
Overall, a lovely autobiography full of fun stories and a fascinating portrayal of growing up in the 50s and 60s.
Thank you, Esme, for sharing your story!

Fantastic insight into an amazing life!

I purchased the audiobook as I am a fan of The Great British Sewing Bee and everything about it. I hadn’t heard of Esme prior to the show but she had touched upon her early career in Swanky Modes in the series, therefore I was intrigued about her story. From start to finish I couldn’t stop listening to the audiobook, what an amazing life and her story is told with honesty and humour. I particularly loved the fact that Esme narrated it herself or I wouldn’t have believed some of the experiences she had! It was lovely to read that she has an amazing family and cherished, lifelong friends.

Interesting Woman

I knew very little about Esme before this book. She has led an interesting life and worked very hard. She deserves all the praise she gets. At first it was hard going as her voice falters throughout and I'm really not interested in sewing, but once you become accustomed to that you are left with nothing but love and admiration for her.
