About this listen
The sound of the ocean, the crash of the waves as they kick up against the sand and rocks - these are the only sounds Megan Greene wants to hear. She wants to leave the rest of the world behind and find some peace.
The offer of a private house on the beach, set in a small town in Maine, is perfect. Time to think - to be by herself. It's all she wants. It's the escape she needs. Until she stumbles across the painting that seems to echo her own chaotic mindset. Until she meets the unfriendly artist behind the stormy painting and discovers his secrets.
All Zachary Adams wants is to be left alone. His canvases, and the unending scope of the ocean and sand, are his life. They direct him - fill his hours. Bring him focus. Until she enters his life.
She dredges up memories of the past - the haunting images he has hidden for years, the fears he has never shared. A story he keeps buried below the surface.
Can she make him see what he is missing? Can he trust her enough to believe?

Incredible love story, so rich and funny at times and sad and deep at others.

Frustrating main characters
After years of wanting to try this author, I was quick to grab the audible as it was included in my membership.
In all respect, this should have been an emotional story but I didn’t feel… Maybe I picked the wrong book? But… my jaded self just found myself getting incredibly frustrated with the two main characters.
Zachary was too hot/cold and no, there was nothing broody nor charming about it despite him having justifiable reasons to be a recluse and mistrust people.
Megan though… I wanted to like her and while her character may be relatable in some respects she didn’t stand out as a modern-day heroine. She was too much of a martyr and felt like an overly emotional damsel in distress for most of the story who lacked any kind of self-preservation.
I enjoyed the setting of the story and the overall plot. I think this was a fitting story for the time it was published but not so much current times.

An Honest review- see below ⬇️
Have to 5⭐️ or my reviews don’t often appear and they put years old ones at the top 🤔
The story looked very promising, John Lane’s dreadful faux posh British accent is dire, so much so that I’ve completely tuned out and giving up on chapter 5. I cannot go another 6 hours of it.
Judging by the tone of his voice it would be nicer if he used his own accent. Being a Brit, I can tell he’s not using his own voice because of how he pronounces some words, they aren’t how someone with this accent would pronounce them. It literally spoils a story. Authenticity is best, so why aren’t the producers understanding it🤷♀️ I’m not the first to comment on bad accents, and pretty sure I won’t be the last.
Disappointing!

A beautiful story
A little slow to start but was definitely worth it in the end. Great narration too.

A predictable romance
A well-worn format of boy meets girl; they hate each other; the truth revealed; they recognise their love; one or more hiccups along the journey but; they live happily ily ever after! Too predictable, though an interesting background concept. Blatant misogynism throughout, from the violence of the sex scenes (with way too much detail for me) to the “possession” of the woman. And I swear I have never “whimpered” in my life (though I may have missed out here?). The worrying assumption made that a baby will cement a rocky relationship made me inwardly cringe! Total romance fiction as long as no one uses it on which to base their picture of the world. Well read, though, and the basic idea was novel.

Brooding, emotional tornado
A sensitive and knowledgeable approach to a damaged man, who gets a chance at redemption if he can allow himself to step into the light.
I really enjoyed this story because there was a depth of character, emotional storms and the message of self value was loud and clear. Well done to the author, for writing this with sensitivity.
