Summary

In a town as small as Tyson, CA, everybody knew the four brothers with the four different fathers - and their penchant for making good music when they weren't getting into trouble. For Mackey Sanders, playing in Outbreak Monkey with his brothers and their friends - especially Grant Adams - made Tyson bearable. But Grant has plans for getting Mackey and the Sanders boys out of Tyson, even if that means staying behind.

Between the heartbreak of leaving Grant and the terrifying, glamorous life of rock stardom, Mackey is adrift and sinking fast. When he's hit rock bottom, Trav Ford shows up, courtesy of their record company and a producer who wants to see what Mackey can do if he doesn't flame out first. But cleaning up his act means coming clean about Grant, and that's not easy to do or say. Mackey might make it with Trav's help - but Trav's not sure he's going to survive falling in love with Mackey.

Mackey James Sanders comes with a whole lot of messy, painful baggage, and law-and-order Trav doesn't do messy or painful. And just when Trav thinks they may have mastered every demon in Mackey's past, the biggest, baddest demon of all comes knocking.

Superb

Took a little while for me to get into this book, and it's definitely a story you need to be in the right mood for, but when you're in that mood, it's absolutely incredible! You just need to be ready for angst. And happiness. And more angst! But it's worth it!

Nick J. Russo was the perfect narrator for this story. I enjoyed every second of his narration and look forward to listening to more of him in the future!

Absolutely fabulous - a rollercoaster of emotions

This was a new author for me selected mainly because I love the narrator. I loved it even though it made me cry. Would highly recommend it.

Another superb performance from Nick....

I really loved the book, and was chuffed to bits when Mr Russo was asked to narrate. I knew that the audio would be full of emotion, and Nick nailed it perfectly!!

Amy Lane has killed me

I'll keep this short.

I loved every word of this book (apart from the British having poor hygiene, RUDE!!) and have yet to listen to an audiobook that has both traumatised, amused and turned me on in equal measures.

Nick J Russo's narration is perfection, he should narrate every book ever.

Brilliant.

raw and sincere

Beneath the Stain is a powerful and sincere.

It follows Mackey and his brothers, both by blood and not, from the forming of their band "Outbreak Monkey" to their breakthrough and major success.

Mackey is gay and from growing up in the small town of Tyson he's had to hide it. A secret relationship during his time in Tyson, before the band got a record deal, ends badly. And when the band gets signed and leaves for LA Mackey uses drugs as a coping mechanism to forget.

The death of the bands manager by overdosing exacerbates Mackeys drug reliance, so Trav is brought in as the new manager, to bring Mackey to rehab and get the band clean.

Mackey and Trav's relationship and the romance that developes is real and raw. It's complex and reading about the two, and the rest of the characters, is so engrossing.

I'm 100% not doing the book justice with this review, just go read it! I know I'm going to be re-reading it again this year.

Good story

What made the experience of listening to Beneath the Stain the most enjoyable?

This was a nice book. Themes of drug addiction, family ties, getting over adolescent love-affairs and homophobia all dealt with in a fairly meaningful way. An effort was also made to develop the characters beyond 1 dimension so all in all a good book - and more so compared to some of the nonsense you can find in this genre. I enjoyed listening to this!

What does Nick J. Russo bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you had only read the book?

Super narration overall.

Fantastic first audio book

Would you consider the audio edition of Beneath the Stain to be better than the print version?

I have not read the print version of this book , but absolutely LOVED listening to it

What did you like best about this story?

I loved the character interactions & it was interesting listening to all the different personalities in how the story played out. Although the story is predominantly about Macky & Travis, it is also essentially about the rest of the band and the immediate people around them.

What about Nick J. Russo’s performance did you like?

Nick J. Russo has a very captivating voice that actually transports you into the story, absolutely fantastic.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

The rape scene in the alley, Mackey finally facing his inner demons and when the band went back home after finding out about Grant's illness & the final moments they have together were all moments that seriously choked me up.

Any additional comments?

Again a really great story read fantastically well by a man with an amazing ability to catapult the listener into the story.
