Summary

One terrible case always haunted detective Matt Ballard. Now many years later, the killer seems to be back. And this time he's after Matt.

When Matt Ballard was starting out his career, three boys were murdered in the same area, the remote and bleak Gibbet Fen. When the main suspect was killed in a hit-and-run, the killings stopped. But Matt was not satisfied that the real murderer had been caught.

Over 25 years later, Matt gets a photo in an unmarked envelope. It's of the Gibbet Fen crime scene. And the picture was taken before the murder took place. More photos arrive, relating to the historic murders, as well as intimate pictures of Matt's very secret private life.

Then another murder happens, with some of the hallmarks of the old case. Has the killer returned, or is this just a sick copycat determined to ruin Matt's life and reputation?

Good story but poor narration

I imagine I would have enjoyed this book a lot more if I had read it. The narration wasn’t for me. Reminded me of Siri on my iPhone and I couldn’t get past it.

narration

liked the story but the narration had a lot to be desired, it was so bad in parts it made me laugh out loud. Bryn is welsh , why a totally different accent? Bit insulted !

Change narrator or give him some lessons

Excellent story but the narrator whilst good at that and the main character was awful at women, children and people with accents. I had to just force myself on as the story was good.

Good story line

Good story but narration lacked credibility. Narrator was fine but accents and women’s voices were poor I’m afraid.

Beware of The Past

Beware of The Past by Joy Ellis. Another excellent story from Joy, as are all her other ‘crimes on the fens’ books series are.
Really gets you into the atmosphere of our UK East coast fenland, even down to broken old windmills. So exciting, it does for adults what Enid Blyton did for children of my generation way back in the 1940s.

Beware the past

Excellent plot, didn't see ending coming and listening to it, it went at a good race pace

Very compelling

This feels a little different to the other series by Joy Ellis, but it’s no less compelling. One thing that struck me was that this felt a bit similar in tone to some of Val McDermid’s Tony Hill series of thrillers which is a good thing in my book and I’d recommend fans of Dr Hill take a look at Matt Ballard.

The only downside was that sometimes the plot felt quite big, like there was a lot there, but Joy Ellis was still able to bring things together and I did enjoy trying to guess what was coming next (sometimes I did, sometimes I didn’t) and the characters are very interesting to me. So, all in all I think this is a series with lots of potential and I look forward to listening the next one.

Gripping until the very end

Quite the best story I have listened to this year. Joy Ellis is a supreme crime writer and is right up there with Agatha

Far fetched but still OK

Love Joy Ellis but found this hard to get through
The narrator wasn’t great and the regional accents quite comical at times...the story overall was good but the Fenland police force would have to be the worst in the world if the plot and incidents are to believed.

Excellent listen

Really good listen or read, I thought I had worked out the killer and the twist but I was wrong, strong characters and rattles on with no nonsence, to be fair I have listened to most of Joy Ellis books and they are all just as good.
