Summary

A Warhammer 40,000 novel

When he discovers a prize that could change the face of the galaxy, disgraced Rogue Trader Janus Draik recruits a team to treasure-seeking misfits to claim it. But danger lurks in the darkness…

Listen to it because: The full story behind the Warhammer Quest: Blackstone Fortress game is revealed! Join Janus Draik and his crew as they venture into the depths of the fortress and encounter all manner of deadly foes.

The story: There are those in the great expanse of the galaxy that seek profit wherever it is to be found: the deal makers, the opportunists and explorers – the Rogue Traders. Granted power by an ancient charter, sanctioned by the Emperor Himself, these scoundrels, entrepreneurs and adventurers roam the galaxy in search of fortune and glory.

None perhaps are as hungry for these twin vices as Janus Draik. All but disowned by his wealthy family, regarded as a wayward son of ill repute and little potential, Draik knows he must restore his fortunes soon or his misadventures will see him destitute and discarded.

So it is then that when he finds a truly exceptional prize, one that will return him to his deserved station, Draik recruits a crew of fellow treasure seekers and sets them to the task. Draik's obsession is all-consuming, and he will risk everything to obtain his prize and its many secrets, including his life or even that of his crew.

Interesting take

Overall a good read. Very isolated from the rest of the lore and stand alone.
A few minor plot holes but nothing that takes too much out of the experience

A fun pulpy adventure within 40K

This is classic tale of rag tagged misfits brought together by a mysterious force. It’s guardian of the galaxy by way of 40K.

A very solid voice performance and delivery help to flesh out this adventure of betrayal, redemption and faith within the ever shifting form of the Blackstone fortress.

Great book. Dreadful vouces

I'm really struggling to finish listening past the 3rd chapter as the voice the narrator has given Janus Draik is utterly awful. Instead of sounding like the gruff adventurer as voiced in the BSF animated advert for the table top game, the narrator has made him sound like a Terry Thomas-esque spiv. Dreadful. Great book, well read but poorly voiced. I amended the performance to one star as 'Loped' is not pronounced 'Lopped'.

slow start but worth it

It takes a while to set up all the characters and the Blackstone, but it doesn't disappoint. Though it ends on a tease, I'm actually looking forward to the continuation of the story.

The narrator is not bad

I really enjoyed this audiobook. It was a refreshing change from story after story featuring space marines.

The narrator is different to the 5+ 40K audiobooks I've listened to, however, you do get used to him and you learn why he was picked. His ability to voice multiple characters with wildly different voices is fantastic.

The opening chapter, prologue, I think it's called is awful. Just get through it. Once you do you'll enjoy the rest.

Blackstone

The book adds some depth to the tabletop game if you're currently playing other than that it's OK. Feels like it doesn't have an intriguing ending and then stops really abruptly. Pick it up if you're playing the game.

Nice listen

This book was good action adventure and made you think what was going to happen next. However it was very drawn out to the extent it got boring in some parts and some chapters were repetitive in layout but overall I enjoy it.

Blackstone Fortress

Fine performance and a great story.
It gives some good answers to the motives of the different characters from the board game , and adds a lot of background to the 40k lore on the Blackstone fortress' in general.
