Sven Porta Tiny and the crew on operation Barbarossa then taifun with all the usual brutality and dark humour fans of Sven Hassel have come to love. Not one of the best books but still very enjoyable all the same. The storylines not as good as wheels of terror, comrades of war or Bloody Road to Death but still has Porta telling his fantastical stories and getting upto mischief with Tiny. For a Sven Hassel fan it’s a must ***’

Great story, horrifically told.
The narrator may be good at doing certain things, narrating Sven Hassel books is not one of them.
He puts stupid accents into the characters voices, for example…Porta (a German soldier) somehow seemingly has a British west country accent.
He also repeatedly mispronounces the names of the main characters. Jullius Heide should be pronounced as "High-duh", or even as (from very famous film and books) "high-dee". However the narrator constantly refers to him as "hey-dee".
It’s horrifically bad, and really puts the listener off…mostly for the accents.

The narrator was poor, mispronounced to many words making it difficult to concentrate on the story. such a shame as I'm a Sven Hassel fan.

I enjoyed this book as I used to at a younger age when I served in Germany. Very graphic and clearly from the memories of someone who had experienced this. What is most interesting however is the fact that Sven Hassel was Danish, served in the Wehrmacht but was accused of being a traitor and/or fabricating his experiences. You decide, my only criticism for this German story based in Russia is why on earth did the narrator chose to use various British accents such as Yorkshire etc for the characters. His lack of understanding of the German language and pronunciation also took something away. I know many many English speaking Germans. I'm sure it wouldn't have been too hard to find someone for that little bit of authenticity. That said, the author whoever he really was, was indeed very gifted. What absolute horror he must have experienced. Great Story!

I purchased this after listening to Wheels of Terror narrated by Rupert Degas who did a fantastic job.
after 2 minutes I had to give up sorry.
the accents that the narrator does here are completely unsuitable for this novel. (Russian front ww2)
I feel like I'm listening to some English farmers up north rather than eastern Europeans and Germans soldiers.

no way on earth am i going to be able to listen to this. im sure the story is great as many have said, however the narration is abysmal. sounds like the war is being fought by the cast of the last of the summer wine. i keep expecting to hear that nora batty is advancing from moscow or that nurse gladis emmanuel has the red army in its grip. did they not listen to this before they released it only wish i could get refund. please please do purchase.
