About this listen

A novella and 12 stories from a master of supernatural horror.

Father John has lived his whole life without knowing a woman's touch. Hard at first, his self-denial grew easier over time, as he learned to master his urges with a regimen of prayer, cold showers, and jigsaw puzzles. That changed the day that Debra Rocks entered his confessional. A rough-talking adult film actress, she has come to ask him to pray for a murdered costar. Her cinnamon perfume infects Father John, and after she departs he becomes obsessed. Around the corner from his church is a neon-lit alley of sin. He goes there hoping to save her life before he damns himself.

That is Blue World, the novella that anchors this collection of chilling stories by Robert R. McCammon. Although monsters, demons, and murderers fill this audio, in McCammon's world the most terrifying landscape of all is the barren wasteland of a lost man's soul.

McCammon never disappoints

Where does Blue World: The Complete Collection rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

When I'm listening to short story collections I'm always prepared for a couple of filler stories. But I can say in all honestly that I thoroughly enjoyed every single one of these.

What did you like best about this story?

There were lots of stories, but one that really stood out was the one where it opens with a family playing scrabble in their living room. It was a real chiller.

Have you listened to any of Bronson Pinchot and Kevin T. Collins ’s other performances? How does this one compare?

I thought the narrators did a sterling job.

As Good as King and Koontz

A great collection of horror and genre stories. A Vietnam vet brings his nightmares with him to diner fuel station one stormy night. A car breaks down in a backwater Alabama town. A seemingly perfect town has a dark secret debt to be paid on Halloween. A heroic serial actor, involved in a tragedy, puts on his cape to fight wrongs again and loads more. The best is the novella, where a priest gets involved in the life of a porn star who has an unwanted admirer, in a brilliant story of faith, hope and redemption.

I read this book first in the early 90s and was delighted to hear that it now includes more short stories. This was an added bonus.

McCammon was a contemporary of King, Koontz, Straub, Laymon and other greats of 80/90s horror. In my opinion he was the equal of them all. This is a great introduction to his work.

Some stories in this book are good

Some stories in this book like the titular one Blue World are excellent. Others are a bit poor or leave you needing more explanation. Still a reasonable book. Some of the stories are a bit dated too.

Good stories, mixed narration

I liked these stories! some end bad, some have a happy ending (for a horror story…) and some leave it to your own imagination… unfortunately one of the narrators overdoes it with his hasty desperation in his voice- that spoils some of the reading

The Kids are the Worst

A great selection of short stories, the ones with evil children were especially creepy. The story of the priest was good too.

Not a fan of most of these stories

I liked Blue World (the one with the priest) - Definitely the best. The one with the old superhero was okay too. And I Scream man and Doom City were alright but I didn't like the very end of either of them.
The rest were........... well as I said - I was not a fan.
Narrator was excellent though! One of the best I've heard.
