About this listen

Jack Parlabane is an investigative journalist who is not averse to breaking the law for a good story.

Scottish parliament is in catatonic shock after experiencing its first dose of Westminster sleaze, and the Catholic Church of Scotland is taking advantage of the politicians' discomfort. Behind the scenes the truth is obscured.

Aware he's missing out on a great story; Parlabane discovers that contacts and a way with words is no defence against people he has helped to put away.

Critic reviews

"Surreal, satirical, irreverent, violent and immensely funny." ( The Times )
"New Labour, the Scottish Parliament, the Catholic Church, the tabloid press, spin doctors - all of them are given a thorough knifing by Brookmyre's razor-sharp pen." ( Maxim)

Great characters, impossible and hugely amusing events, surprises and a wonderfully planned denouement. I wouldn't mind if his writing were a little more concise but he does create character and a world in which it lives with enormous detail, particularly the inner dialogue. Very enjoyable. Well worth the time.

Intriguing as ever

Slow and quite "bitty" to start. However, once the threads combine and the pace of the story picks up, it's really enjoyable and riveting. I loved the humour and Angus King's performance was super.

Stick with it!

Very poignant, entertaining and a great commentary on new Labour and the church. Brookmyres understanding of people is second to none.

Absolutely hilarious and brilliant

Another cracker from the magnificently acerbic Mr Brookmyre, wonderfully narrated as usual. More Parlabane capers!

Angus King has a pretty strong Scots accent, but I soon got used to it & enjoyed listening to him in fact.
The story is very well woven & had me guessing.
It contains murder, blackmail, manipulation, coercion . . . & keeps going right to the end.
I thoroughly enjoyed it (& there are no frogs 👍🏼)

Loved it, best Jack P story yet.
Could listen to Chris Brookemyre books every day

Coming late to the Parlabane series, I'm working through them in order. This is a great snapshot of recent political history (new Labour) but not as engaging as others in the series. There were lengthy 'essays' on Scottish religion, useful as context, but slowed the pace of the story, in my view. But still a cracking yarn.

Another great conspiracy thriller, a bit lumpy

Great characters and story brought together in typical Christopher Brookmyre style. A thoroughly good read.
