About this listen

The world has changed. The buildings have fallen, blown away with the winds. The roads crumble as the forest takes back the land we stole a long time ago. It's only been 10 years since the end, but it feels like a hundred for Emma, who has been alone since the beginning, surviving on the skills her crazy father forced on her.

Trust no one. Pull the trigger. Hide. Run. Stay away from the other survivors. Stay away from the Infected. She has obeyed her father's rules since she can remember running from the car accident that claimed his life. But one night that all changes. The knock at her cabin door and the voice of the girl on the other side don't make Emma help the girl. No - it's the fact that the girl, Anna, is willing to die to save her wounded brother that changes everything in Emma's world. Emma finds friends and family in Anna and her brother, Jake. She feels things that she thought she never would. But like her Granny always said, "Everything comes at a cost. You must decide what you are willing to pay." For Emma that decision comes as Anna is stolen and taken to the breeder farms. Emma knows that she will pay anything to get Anna back, including her own life.

Good enough story and characterisation to keep you listening unlike many of the plus catalogue books.

Held my attention

Brilliant. If you have ever read the passage this is similar in the way you are absorbed into each character. Loved it and can’t wait to start the next one. Cliffhanger or what! Will be buying these books for sure. Love a hard copy. If you enjoy a free audiobook always buy a hard copy to credit the author.

Grabbed me straight away!

It was free and decent enough to hold my attention. Set in a world where 95% of men appear to be sadistic rapists and women are there to be abused or used as breeding livestock - can’t help but wonder with all the unbelievable stories coming over from the USA whether it’s how the world is going! Scary!

It was….ok

Great book, wonderful narration. Not a zombie apocalypse book, there are virus ridden humans but they are not the central theme. Roll on book 2

I enjoyed the story most of the way through, although parts annoyed me. Someone who supposedly cared for the main character ignoring her when she spoke, pulling her around and generally behaving in a manner which most women would not and should not tolerate, misogyny at its finest!

A good story,but…

I downloaded this from the Plus catalogue and absolutely loved it - I was gripped from the start. Great storyline and I really enjoyed the narration.

Couldn’t believe the whole series was freely available! Would definitely recommend.

Brilliant series 🌟

It’s unpleasant how even the bits that are supposed to be genuine attractions are dripping with misogyny and men who ignore consent and men who cross boundaries and apparently that’s all ok.
Some grammar mistakes.
Otherwise the story is ok if you like dystopian/post-apocalyptic stuff, which I do.

Dodgy misogyny, bad grammar, but decent story

enjoyable

The premise (post apocalyptic/dystopian future) is good and had an interesting take on gender roles in a future society within corrupt government systems- nothing especially new or groundbreaking but interesting enough to listen to. The characters however are jarring - the reluctant hero/main protagonist goes on enough of a journey to show growth and begin development into a kick ass Katnis Everdeen style hero. HOWEVER the male characters are rooted in misogynistic stereotypes and the way the hero flits from bad ass feminist into a female who is under the spell of douchebag males while having a drearyinternal battle of why they fall for these types gets in the way of keeping the bad ass the author is intending to build on track. The author needs to pick a lane and remove the angsty trope which is feel is over Americanised and they would have a solid teen/ya dystopian series on their hands.

Good premise - conflicting characters

Enjoyable. Occasionally repetitive about how she feels about Will. Well read. Looking forward to the next book.
