About this listen

Private Investigator Nick Nowak is back in two novella length mysteries set in Chicago during the early 1980s. In Little Boy Boom, Nick's car explodes when a thief attempts to steal it. Realizing the bomb was meant for him, Nick sets out to discover who wants him dead only to find that the list of possible suspects is longer than he'd like. When he begins to run out of suspects he wonders if the bomb was truly meant for him.

In Little Boy Tenor, Nick is asked to find the murderer of a church choir's star tenor, while at the same time his friend Ross asks him to find out the truth behind his lover, Earl Silver's mysterious death. As he juggles the two cases, he becomes increasingly disturbed by what he learns.

Oh My Heart

The third book the Boystown series pulls no punches. Nick not only has to figure out two different and dangerous mysteries, but also struggles with the changes in his personal life. His boyfriend continues to get sicker and sicker, and no one knows why. This weighs heavily on Nick, but he refuses to self-reflect and analyze his feelings. Like the previous two books in this series, Marshall Thornton writes a fascinating and engaging book that’s packed full of emotion, sex, mystery, and action.

Two substantial and absorbing Nick Nowak cases!

This third book in the excellent Boystown series covers two absorbing cases of gay ex-cop / PI Nick Nowak: Little Boy Boom where a thief is killed in a car explosion and Little Boy Tenor where a choir soloist is murdered. I like this longer format which provides more in-depth cases and explores more of Nick’s personal life. Marshall Thornton has set these two stories in 1980s Chicago against the backdrop of the slowly emerging AIDS crisis and a number of characters grapple with mysterious opportunist illnesses. It’s sobering to listen to Nick’s frequent casual unprotected hookups knowing AIDS is about to cut a swathe through generations of gay men. Balancing this, I enjoy Nick’s jaundiced view of the world. Like Philip Marlowe, there’s a lovely humour in being so cynical. Just a reminder that these are gay fiction, not m/m romances: despite having one (or two lovers), Nick is not monogamous. At one point he says, “To be honest, it would be nice if love and sex and duty and fidelity all managed to happen at once. But for me, they never seemed to line up”. Audio narrator Brad Langer is superb at capturing Nick and the other characters’ personalities and accents.

Highly recommended

More puzzling but enjoyable cases for Nick to solve while his personal life takes an unexpected turn. I’m loving this well-written and skilfully-crafted series, which is superbly narrated by Brad Langar. He brings the stories and characters to life. Highly recommended.
