About this listen

Admiral Horatio Hornblower has given Commander William Brewer captaincy of the captured pirate sloop El Dorado.

Now under sail as the HMS Revenge, its new name suits Brewer's frame of mind perfectly. He lost many of his best men in the engagement that seized the ship, and his new orders are to hunt down the pirates who have been ravaging the trade routes of the Caribbean sea. But Brewer will face more than one challenge before he can confront the pirate known as El Diabolito. His best friend and ship's surgeon, Dr. Spinelli, is taking dangerous solace in alcohol as he wrestles with demons of his own.

The new purser, Mr. Allen, may need a lesson in honest accounting. Worst of all, Hornblower has requested that Brewer take on a young ne'er-do-well, Noah Simmons, to remove him from a recent scandal at home. At 23, Simmons is old to be a junior midshipman, and as a wealthy man's son he is unaccustomed to working, taking orders, or suffering privations.

William Brewer will need to muster all his resources to ready his crew for their confrontation with the Caribbean's most notorious pirate. In the process, he'll discover the true price of command.

Life Aboard HMS Revenge Hunting Pirates

This is an audio performance of this swashbuckling novel set aboard HMS Revenge in Caribbean waters following the Napoleonic Wars in the early 19th century. Our central character, the newly promoted Captain Brewer, protégé of Horatio Hornblower, is a likeable chap. We are treated to the daily workings of his ship and crew as well as colonial politics. The action is centred around the hunt for pirates in the Caribbean Sea. This is a well written tale with well rounded characters we have empathy for. The narration was adequate if a little too slow for me, I increased the replay speed to compensate a little.

Equal to the wonderful book 1

I listened to this follow-up from Brewers Luck and happy to say it didn't disappoint. Adventure, chasing and fighting pirates on the high seas. Again the wonderful narration and sound effects. The only downside is there isn't another to listen to. My bedtime is going to be quiet now.

Enjoyable, but odd phrasing by narrator

It was a good fun book with some excellent gripping parts. The narrator quite annoyingly uses weird and often plain wrong phrasing and/or word emphasis in his diction.
