About this listen
Explore the common ground underlying the diverse expressions of the Buddha's teachings with two of Tibetan Buddhism's best-selling authors.
Buddhism is practiced by hundreds of millions of people worldwide, from Tibetan caves to Tokyo temples to redwood retreats. To an outside viewer, it might be hard to see what they all have in common. In Buddhism, His Holiness the Dalai Lama and American Buddhist nun Thubten Chodron map out with clarity the convergences and the divergences between the two major strains of Buddhism - the Sanskrit traditions of Tibet and East Asia and the Pali traditions of Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. Especially deep consideration is given to the foundational Indian traditions and their respective treatment of such central tenets as the four noble truths, the practice of meditation, and the meaning of nirvana enlightenment. The authors seek harmony and greater understanding among Buddhist traditions worldwide, illuminating the rich benefits of respectful dialogue and the many ways that Buddhists of all stripes share a common heritage and common goals.

Written for the devotee not the bystander
I struggled through most of it, I think this should come with a preface "Not for the unitiated" As a person with an interest in Buddhism sadly i must admit my flaw and say much of this was above my pay grade. I have the utmost respect for His Holiness and thank you for giving this insight. After this listen, my respect for anyone entering the monastic life, whether in the Pali or Sanscrit traditions and striving for what is laid out in this book has grown immensely.

Complicated as an audiobook.
Does not work in audio format.
Story is killed by repeating much of the book on 3 or 4 different dialects.
Totally stops the flow.
Should have explained it will be read in one dialect, and stuck with it.

Well worth listening to.
I'm new to Buddhist philosophy and I think this book was a bit too much of a deep dive for me but will come back to it and listen again with a clearer understanding.

impossible to follow
As an audiobooks this is dreadful. The reader says defer in place of differ and references are cited without pause. Entirely unenjoyable and a poor representation of HH Dalai Lama's wisdom
