About this listen

In this first in a series of wickedly funny mysteries, best-selling author Lawrence Block introduces Bernie Rhodenbarr, sometimes burglar, sometimes sleuth. Pulling only an occasional, very discreet job, Bernie manages to maintain his comfortable New York City apartment and keep his unorthodox vocation a closely-guarded secret. Every burglar knows never to trust anonymous phone calls. But when the caller offers easy money for an hour's work, Bernie can't ignore the job. All he has to do is find a blue box in an empty apartment. But the valuable box is nowhere to be found. The occupant is, however - and he's dead. Suddenly Bernie finds himself the object of a massive man hunt, wanted for both theft and murder. Winner of multiple Edgar and Shamus Awards, Lawrence Block crafts clever plots with characters you wish you could have over for drinks. But stop to count the silver afterwards. You'll find yourself laughing out loud as gravelly-voiced narrator Richard Ferrone brings sticky-fingered Bernie to life.©1977 Lawrence Block (P)1998 Recorded Books, LLC Mystery Suspense Fiction Funny Witty Thief

I didn't think I would like this Burglar type thing !

so I was sad the author wasn't reading the book....but I loved the narrator
any way...I did not take the the idea of having a burglar for the main character
OK gentleman thieves like Raffels & David Niven
I switched off after a short while....miffed really
but then I needed to get on my exercise bike & I had nothing lined up to listen to....so I started this story again...weird how I fell into it & found myself liking it....then loving it
guessing who was up to what....yes I will listen to the others in the series....Burglars Here we go

Good story with plenty of twists

Well read and good pacy story. The author has a dry sense of humour and the characters come to life.

Burglars Can't Be choosers

I have just re listened to most of the Burglar series with much enjoyment. They are funny sophisticated and slightly immoral tales. Bernie gets himself into numerous scrapes, deals with Ray the most honest cop money can buy and lunches with best friend Carolyn. The books are always entertaining with unusual twists and turns.

Richard Ferrone is an excellent reader and suits the text perfectly.

I recommend these to anyone who likes an offbeat murder mystery.

Unfortunately Burglar on the Prowl the tenth book in the series is not available but I wait in hope!

"Nobody ever puts cuffs on Bernie."

Meet Bernie Rhodenbarr, a (usually) successful burglar. But this time something goes wrong and he has to find out who has implicated him, and why, to prove his innocence. Crazy and convoluted plot to keep the reader guessing, told in the first person - and funny. Narrator Richard Ferrone's performance as Bernie is an excellent fit and the whole is an easy, amusing read.
Recommended.
