Summary

Autism—that’s being able to count matches really fast and knowing that 7 August 1984 was a Tuesday, right? Well, no. In this book, Bianca Toeps explains in great detail what life is like when you’re autistic.

She does this by looking at what science says about autism (and why some theories can go straight in the trash), but also by telling her own story and interviewing other autistics. Bianca talks in a refreshing and sometimes hilarious way about different situations autistic people encounter in daily life. She has some useful tips for non-autistic people too: what you should do if someone prefers not to look you in the eye, why it is sometimes better to communicate by email, and, most important of all, why it is not a compliment if you say: “But you don’t look autistic at all!”

A brilliant, informative book

I really enjoyed this and found Bianca's unpacking of the DSM diagnostic criteria really helpful. The book is written with a light tone, and the information is delivered clearly and kindly. There is plenty here to help and support someone with an ASD diagnosis, or someone who knows someone just diagnosed. Slight marks off for performance as the narrator sometimes changes her pronunciation of names and pronounces some words incorrectly, which distracts from the content.

I felt represented

There are many excellent books based on first-person accounts, but I felt represented in two aspects: 1.I’m not special. I don’t have any talents, hidden powers, or whatever that make me “that” kind of autist; 2.I have been told I don’t look autistic way too many times, and this book focuses on the tension between good intentions and neuro-stereotypes that I feel has affected so many of such interactions for me.

Clear and truthful

I am an autistic person and I have been diagnosed very late in life. I have thoroughly enjoyed the book and found solace in knowing that I am not alone in my thinking. Is a constant “but you don’t look autistic” : how should I look ? Or the side eyes when I need help and more. Thanks for this book wholeheartedly! Now I know that I am not alone in my struggles.

Important content but audio issues.

The audio balance and narrator’s mike (especially at the start) just weren’t good. Harsh S sounds are all over the place and make it hard to listen to.
