Summary

Random House presents the audiobook edition of Charlie Savage by Roddy Doyle.

Meet Charlie Savage: a middle-aged Dubliner with an indefatigable wife, an exasperated daughter, a drinking buddy who’s realized that he’s been a woman all along… Compiled here for the first time is a whole year’s worth of Roddy Doyle’s hilariousseries for the Irish Independent. Giving a unique voice to the everyday, he draws a portrait of a man – funny, loyal, somewhat bewildered – trying to keep pace with the modern world (if his knees don’t give out first).

Critic reviews

A delight from start to finish. (Max Davidson)
More than comedy or insight, this work has tenderness… It does more than tickle our bellies, it warms our hearts. (Niamh Donnelly)
Brilliantly funny. Heart-warmingly, vulnerably hilarious in fact. Doyle has crafted Charlie Savage with great care and has imbued him with such depth of character that I can’t imagine a reader finishing the book without loving him, just a little… savour every page because Charlie Savage will enrich your life as long as he is in it. (Ceire Duggan)
This portrait of an ordinary man (and one clearly past his best) is by turns hilarious and heartfelt. (Rachel Lloyd)

Wonderful

I haven’t read any Roddy Doyle and what a great choice to start with. What a wonderful book and what a pleasure to listen to the author reading as well. I laughed all the way through - thoroughly recommend

Funny, heartwarming and real.

This story is a very firm reminder why this fiercely proud Clare woman married her very own Charlie Savage where my best years were when I lived in Dublin. Can't recommend enough.

A delightful few hours

I needed something amusing and diverting to enjoy while I got over a chest infection. This was perfect. Roddy Doyle turns the everyday life of an ordinary man into something marvellous, touching and very funny. Charlie’s family and daily concerns are vividly evoked.

Roddy Doyle's masterpiece

Brilliant. I've lost count of how often I've listened to this. It's clever, witty and poignant. Each time I listen I discover something new.

Good but short

Great storytelling but a little short. Was surprised when it ended. He reads it very well.

Ara sure it's alright.....

I do like Roddy Doyle's books, always have.
and hitting 50, I get the sentiment in the book.
but I think it could have been more. it only touches on things.
