Summary

From the New York Times best-selling author of Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? comes an enchanting collection of stories for the holiday season.

For years Jeanette Winterson has loved writing a new story at Christmastime, and here she brings together 12 of her brilliantly imaginative, funny and bold tales. For the 12 Days of Christmas - a time of celebration, sharing and giving - she offers these 12 plus one: a personal story of her own Christmas memories.

These tales give the listener a portal into the spirit of the season, where time slows down and magic starts to happen. From trees with mysterious powers to a tinsel baby that talks, philosophical fairies to flying dogs, a haunted house and a disappearing train, Winterson's innovative stories encompass the childlike and spooky wonder of Christmas. Perfect for listening to by the fire with loved ones or while traveling home for the holidays. Enjoy the season of peace and goodwill, mystery and a little bit of magic courtesy of one of our most fearless and accomplished writers.

An absolute joy

Loved every bittersweet second of this book. The stories, the recipes, the hope, the sadness, the past and the Christmas yet to come. This is going to become a festive favourite of mine.

Absolutely Glorious

This was not what I expected in the slightest. I imagined 12 predictably tame and pedestrian tales of the season. Instead what I got was a ripsnorking stonker of a Christmas companion. The stories were rich as Christmas Pudding. Some more than a little racy, others evocative some reflective all interlaced with insight and reflection form a wonderful woman who has lived well and learned much. In fact I think I have fallen a little but in love with her through this book. I feel like I have been welcomed into a very intimate sharing of Christmas with a wonderful stranger. This might not be for everyone and perhaps the reader may have to be of a certain age to fully appreciate this wonderful work but I absolutely loved it.

Enjoyed this so much

loved listening to this in the lead up to Christmas.
The stories are entertaining, the recipes sound good, haven't tried any. Jeanette's insights and biographical excerpts tied it all together. I think this will become a Christmas favourite.

A wise, insightful beautiful journey of words

I loved the books, the stories and recipes with over sentiment or wrong mythologising of Christmas. Listening saw me happily through a Christmas I felt I could not bear with curious insightful tales of the beyond and everyday intertwined. I loved the voices (written and spoken), especially Winterson’s Yorkshire. Thank you such a treasure.

Beautiful book for Christmas days

Such a wonderful book for the festive season. I loved the mix of stories and the author’s recollections, and even the recipes even though I’m not much of a foodie. This book made me smile, it made me cry, it warmed my heart and made me think. The stories are a mixture of enchanting, spooky and touching and are always imaginative.
Imogen Church’s narration was absolutely perfect for the stories (brilliant at accents). Hearing the author’s recollections in her own warm and gentle voice was very moving at times. Just loved this book - I can imagine I’ll listen to it again next Christmas
